Thinking of a new toy.
« on: February 20, 2016, 07:51:34 AM »
Just tossing the idea around in my head of picking up a new gun. No rush may be quite some time as I like to research the crap out of everything lol. Thinking of a better dog gun,, something of a better quality. Been looking at some of the new Remi's some of the extreme service ones.

My big question is what caliber. Really leaning towards a 25-06 dont know why but this caliber has been on my brain for years. We are big fans of the -06 casing as the boys and I have everything in this casing other than the 25-06. I think it would make a nice long range dog gun and heck a beauty deer rifle as well. Then there is the .257 Weatherby as well. Only problem with the weatherby is the shells, price and availability.

Thoughts and opinions please.

Did you ever consider a 6.5 x 55 Swede?

I haven't hunted with one but they sure do shoot sweet on paper.

25-06 great round. I hand the chance to get one in a Winchester 1885 once. Didn't jump. Looking at one in a Browning 81 to pair with the 7mm-08, I just got.( I'm a leaver guy remember)  Don't have much experience 6.5x55 but read and talked to a lot of guys with them. They love em. Sako would be a great choice(bit of cash though) or Winchester mod 70, Browning X-Bolt? Funny how a guy can get just as excited about someone else getting a new gun, as much as himself.

Never thought of the 6.5x55 Sonny,, I am not all that familiar with the European numbers. They just don't sink in when I look at them you know what I mean. When I see an American caliber I can register what it is not so with those, that and availiblilty of shells is an issue. I don't live in the city nor do I go there often, once a year is lots for me. We do have a couple decent gun shops around home here that I am sure would have them I guess.

I would never rule out a Sako or a Browning t any manafacturer as far as that goes. But I am leaning towards a Remi, but it just depends what it feels like when I handle it. I have a cabinet full of Remi's and they have served me well with that said I have been disappointed with some of their newer builds. What would be awesome is to find an older Remi in good shape. I will keep my eye out on CGN and see what's on there.

This one looks like it may be a nice unit.

Another one that had been bugging me is a 7mm-08 another sweet little gun.

Was looking at some numbers on the 25-06 and it pushes a 85 grain bullet out the muzzle at 3550 claimed anyways but still,, that's smoken.

That's a nice piece, mountain models are sweet, light weight and very easy to carry. I don't think you can go wrong with either caliber, I have 3 7mm-08's but like I said looking closely at the 25-06 now. Good luck with your quest. There's just to many guns to own , I think I need to spend more time on this addiction, of course there is a lady I live with who's opinion is just a tad shy of that thought. Nice club to belong to though.

Cousin, "grew up" hunting with a 25-06;  loved it. Wife uses a 7-08 for hunting deer, it's a dandy calibre, based on a 308 so brass is common as dirt.  Read lot's of guys extolling the virtues of the 6.5x55;  sounds like you may need more than one.   ;D

Tradex sells used euro guns, read the descriptions carefully and you can maybe try a 6.5 on the cheap.  My experience tradex under describes their guns and it'll show up in better shape than you're expecting.

You reload?  The name weatherby means nothing if you only need 40 or 50 brass.  Always wanted to try a 338-378 but for me the weatherby stumbling block has always been about the price of the gun, not the shells.  ;)

Not to beat a dead horse, but a lee anniversary reloading kit is about a hundred and fifty bucks...........just sayin'.  :)

In the 80s I had a Tikka in 25-06 ,it was a sweet rifle with little recoil. Wish I still had it , but then I would have not purchased a Rem Mountain SS in 280 Rem. I also have a Winchester Feather Weight  which has the best fit and finish of all 3 .  The stock on the Rem is light but is not that great of a fit . The Winchester is the same weight and perfect.  Also I like the fact it is wood. Just my 2 cents worth.
If you are too busy to hunt , you are too busy.

I just bought a 6.5x55 in a stainless tikka last week. I have made some loads up and will try it next week at the range. The older guns were not built to with stand the same pressure as the modern rifles are built for so if you compare ballistics by looking at reloading manuals keep that in mind. The bullet diameter is .264 " so its a bit smaller diameter than a 270 win.(.277 "). They are supposed to be very accurate and easy to load for so it would be nice one to start loading for too if you decided to go that direction. I also have a 25-06 and really like it and a fellow would not go wrong on that for sure. I don't enjoy hard recoiling rifles and both of these are nice to shoot.
