2013 Whitetail Quest.
« on: November 07, 2013, 05:09:17 PM »
My 2013 Whitetail quest will start tomorrow so if you all don't mind I will start my hunt log.

Going to head over to La Biche tomorrow and hook up with the oldest boy. We are going to hit some of our old haunts and try some rattling and grunting and see what we can come up with.

We have had the trail cams up in the back 40 and looks like we have a couple decent bucks roaming around again. The deer in the second pic we have watched grow for 3 years now and he is getting pretty decent, I would say high 50's low 60's this year,, hard to say.. Sam likes this one, if he gets a chance at him I think he will take him. Personally I would like to see him go another year but it's up to Sam. The second deer has some pretty decent mass on the left antler,, I would like to see him go another year and see what he makes either way it's nice to see some decent animals on our own land,, makes it all worth while..

Was a pretty good day yesterday,, we saw 4 bucks in total with two of them pretty darn nice deer. One nice 5 x 5 that had some interest in the rattle,, never came in hard but he came out on the line about 100 yards out and had a good sniff in the air then worked his way off. He would of went in the 50's then after we came upon a very nice 4 x 4 not a shooter yet but darn nice for a 4 by then a couple smaller bucks. Tough day out there though with the snow,, holy cow woke up and there was 6" on the ground and still coming hard, by the end of the day I would say we got close to 8 - 10" no kiddin its darn near up to my knee in the bush. Couldn't get out today or tomorrow but Monday and for a couple days I am going to sit the stands on our land and se what comes around.

Other than the one buck that came for a little sniff no real action off of the horns or grunts yet..

Was in the stand last night and tonight,, pretty good nights. Had a wonky 4 by under the stand last night and a few does and tonight just a little fork horn and some does. They are really starting to move around here the last few days hopefully I get a crack at one of the big boys here soon. Tried rattling tonight just did one sequence from my stand with no results, I don't want to get to aggressive over my stands yet.

They really did start to move starting about 3 or 4 days ago we found.  It is full on pre-rut now.
Have fun, Terry.

Had a couple nice bucks under the stand tonight. The wonky 4 by came by for a visit again and just before dark a new dandy high 5 by came out.. This is a new buck I haven't caught on the trail cams yet. He isn't quite a shooter yet, be an awesome deer in a year or two, very semetrical and my goodness his G2's have to be all of 10" or 11" high just no width to him and just barely has his G4's so he needs a couple years but heck it was good for a few moments while he was still hanging back in the spruce wasn't sure if he was one of our big boys or not,, got the heart going for a couple mins anyways lol,, it was fun..

Hang in there Terry those big boys will show up sooner or later. Next week I start my WT hunting and then over to the forestry on the 20th for moose.
G'luck!

Well this year has certainly not worked out the way I intended. I just couldn't pull off the time I wanted to spend out in the field. The job wasn't the issue this year but the pending work at home got to me. I have spent the last two weeks pretty much at the grind trying to get my shop finished which I have came a long ways in accomplishing. Unfortunately this meant I had to sacrifice my hunting this fall. I just set it in my mind to get it done and out of the way so next fall hopefully will be clear. Other than a few of the nights spent in my stand at home and the one day with Jesse that was it for me. My only solace is hopefully the big one will make it through to next year.

The good news,, Sammy decided to take this buck this morning, we have caught this one on the trail cams quite a few times and this morning Sam decided with only a couple days to go he would take this buck. He stayed home from school this morning and it didn't take long as we have been seeing this guy almost every morning crossing the field. By 8:05 Sam made a nice 200 yard shot with his .280 Remi and dropped the buck in its tracks. This is Sams first Whitetail buck. Gross score 146,, no hog but a nice deer all the same.

Looks like we will be getting some sausage made this fall after all.

Nice buck, glad to hear the 280 still knocks the hell out of them. Love to have one of those Mountain  Rems. In 280.
