270 Winchester for Moose
« on: September 05, 2019, 09:43:07 AM »
Hi all, not a very experienced hunter.

What grain bullet is recommended for hunting Moose with a 270 Winchester.  Son got a draw this year and that's his gun.  Will be buying a bigger gun but can't get the one he wants in time for the season so he'll be using his 270.

I don't own a 270, but unless your son really wants a bigger gun, no need to worry about been under gunned with a 270 for moose. It's about one of the best cal's for moose, elk and deer there is. 140g , 150g in my opinion( I'm sure others will chime in) will be fine. Remember shot placement is the key with any caliber you carry. Good luck and welcome to AS.

Excellent moose caliber, especially with today's modern bullets. If your son goes to a bigger gun like a .338 remember to make sure the stock fits him and is not a featherlight or else he is going to get beat up by the loads.

Many, many a moose fell to a .270 in our family. I hunted with one for 15 years shot plenty of moose with that gun as did my sons. My father packed one for over 20 years I can’t say enough about the .270, in my mind the best all round cartridge out there.

Your over the counter bullet choices are limited most times with the .270 but any new load in a 140 grain is more than efficient for any ungulate animal in North America. Find one that shoots good out of your gun and hunt in complete confidence that it’s sufficient. If it fails to kill the animal it’s the hunter not the bullet or the caliber trust me.

Like Walleyes says. And because the .270 is owned by so many folks, there are lower priced cartridges on the market. That means more target, vermin, and varmint shooting. Remember to save your brass, because you can reload that brass with high quality bullets at a very reduced cost to you.

And for that higher caliber gun that your son wants to purchase. Buy one. Have even more fun.

A great many bull moose souls look down on me and my Ruger M77 .270 from moose heaven with frowns.
My gun likes boat-tail 130 grain sierras, it doesn't shoot 140's and 150's worth a crap.  Shot placement is the single biggest factor like others have said here.
Hit them in the lungs or heart and they die.
I think I see a rip in the social fabric, Brother can you spare some ammo?

Your son will do just fine with a .270  ;)

A few years ago at work we were discussing moose rifles and one guy swore by a .25-06 shooting a 120gr bullet.
Another guy told him that he was nuts and the best moose rifle was a .338 win mag shooting 220gr bullets.
I told them that I use a .30-06 with 180gr bullets.

The funny thing is all three rounds will work and I think it more or less boils down to personal choice.

Thanks.

So please help me out here.

How does a 270 with a 140 grain differ to a 30-06 (my rifle) with a 180 grain?

I’d think the 30-06 would be more stopping power with the heavier bullet but is there much difference?

Just curious.

Moose don't read ballistic charts.  ;D

A good hit in the kitchen with a little .243 will put meat on the table.

My son is full grown now but he shot his first moose when he was only 14 years old. He was using a '30-06 with a KDF recoil arrester on it because he was only 90lbs soaking wet. I told him to pretend that there was a beachball in the moose's chest and no matter what angle the shot was on his job was to put a hole in that beachball.

His first moose was a one shot kill at 150 yards. I wouldn't worry to much about what the numbers on a chart say, just go out and have fun.

And if your son bags a moose we would love to see some pics. ;)

If we talk pure stopping power, the 30-06 in a 220g bullet would out perform a 270 in a lighter bullet sure. But we are not going after charging grizzlies or water buffalo ( might be a little under gunned with the 06 also if we where) as sonny said moose don’t know the difference. There are volumes of books written on calibers, bullets, muzzle velocity’s, sectional density of bullets, and so on, and it is a neat science to learn. But with new hunters I like to separate that from learning how to stock, shoot and care for the animal after the shot, sometimes people get caught up in the gun more then the hunt. Long winded reply and didn’t really answer the question directly, but it would take 4 guys around a moose camp over a bottle of whiskey to address this topic, and I think you would end up walking away more confused. Both you and your son have two excellent choices in a moose gun with no worries,  post picture of your hunt, successful or not.

I'm old school lol. I always shoot 180 gr as that's what dad told me is best in the bush :). Shot a lot of moose, deer and 1 elk with 180 gr. I have friends with much more ballistics knowledge and have told me over and over to shoot 140 or 160 gr but my old savage 99 shoots good groups with the 180 gr and I like that it has a bit more ommmf. Not much more from what I hear hahahaha but it gets the job done. You all seen my boys 54 inch bull, taken with my rifle and 180 gr :)

As mentioned, find what shoots best and has manageable recoil and you will be posting your sons first moose soon.

Good luck on your hunts.
