Looks like you had an awesome hunt!

Which taxidermist did you take the goat to? What kind of mount do you have planned?

What was the meat like on a 13 yr old goat?

Well the meat is pretty much like chewing on your boot so not sure what is gunna happen to that.
And still deciding on the Taxidermist, probably gunna go with Highpoint Taxidermy. The cape is banged up pretty good in the face area and with all the rain and such it was pretty tough to get the cape salted and dried so gunna have to see how it turns out but if all is well its just gunna be a shoulder mount with maybe a bit of a down streatched neck. Was gunna do a half body pedastal mount with the goat  laying down but will wait for a longer haired goat to do that one.

No kidding on how tough the meat is. Tastes ok ,if you could only chew through it. I think a grinder or jerky would be my suggestion for it. Look forward to seeing the mount Darcy.

Well Darcy I'm happy for you, you've been dreaming of hunting for mountain goat as a hunter for a long time, good to see you harvested one.  An old nanny like that is a true trophy, thanks for sharing and beautiful pictures as well.  Can't get enough of that country now myself, a real piece of paradise the northern Rockies.
Shoot straight or eat track soup.

Dumb question but isnt illegal to shoot nannies? Isnt it frowned upon in many regions? I thought they liked to keep nannies for breading.

Nannies are 100% legal to harvest. And yes under most circumstances are some what frowned upon when shot and most do not shoot them to try and keep populations up. But the goat I harvested is 13 years old and was no longer a breeding goat. She was in the high age bracket for goats and I thought she was a better canidate for my tag then the 3 and 4 year old billies that I was seeing.

Pretty tough but a old goat has the look of an old goat. Just like a two year old deer has alot different look than an old veteran buck. Plus through the spotting scope you could see the rings stacked up on the base up almost 2 inches up the horn. Ive guided to at least 10 goats and the oldest of them being around 8 and the rings didnt go up near as high. Next to impossible to accuratly age a goat on the hoof like a sheep but with some experience you can tell when your looking at a immature of very mature animal.

Many guys im sure think I shouldnt have shot a nanny but thats there opinion, im happy to have left them young Billies on the mountains to cover manny nannies over the next 8 - 10 years and take a goat that only had a few teeth left and was at the age that she may have not made the next couple winters.

Oh and if you arent sure you can call a goat old like that in the field when I get home ill post the video of right before the shot where I did just that.

Do you know how long BC goats live for? I read that some goats have lived 18-20 years. If they all could live that a pretty good life span with a lot of babies.
What part of BC did you hunt?

I've read that some people live to be 110-115 years old.  Doesn't mean that we all will, but those of us that do will be well past our breeding years.  Sheepguide knows what he's talking about, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with taking out a goat like that.  Killing that goat affected the population by 1, and only 1.  That's it.  X2 on giving it a rest.

Yep the odd goat does live to 18. Thats the oldest goat the guy that registered mine has ever had in but like he said that is far from the norm. He said the average is well bellow on what he has registered. He said most are in the area of 8. I know its a great goat to take and im proud of hell of it. I appreciate your concern on the animal I shot and respect your opinion, so thank you for sharing it.

May wanna read these links, has some info on average goat ages...

Yeah just was curious since so much of BC holds goats. Ever hunt the coastal ones or the southern ones?

Nope, but is deffinatly the place to go for big goats. We did a Stone Sheep/Goat hunt so was the reason we headed to where we did.
