Alberta Trophy Mule Deer Hunting
« on: August 16, 2016, 05:04:26 PM »
I have never been a huge mule deer fan, back in the 90s I did bag a few mulies in WMU350 while hunting whitetails, used to be a general tag there not sure it is anymore. My best mule deer there was about 170, there used to be some decent sized bucks in that area, of course there was probably only a quarter of the hunting pressure too. I drew a mule deer tag out by Rocky Mountain House a few years ago, never did fill it. I now have a pretty high priority for mule deer, will be 7 next year. What would be a good zone to hunt for a trophy buck, and not only considering just the amount of trophy bucks, but an area where a guy might get some permission or there is crown land accessible. This will probably be the last time I go after mule deer, so would like it to be memorable.

The 2 areas I like south of calgary are WMU 305 or 108.  Both take higher priority but definitely have some great trophy quality.  I can be talked into tagging along!!   :D

304 and 305 Paul, my old stompin grounds. Lots of crown land too. Wish I was over there I'd show you around. Anyhow get a topo map of the Porcupine Hills and you will be fine. You can get in west of Claresholm or Nanton, depending on what zone you wish to hunt. You can get in off 22x but you have to know where and how.

My boys are down south on their muly hunt. I was supposed to be there but do to an unfortunate accident we couldn't make it. Some of you may have heard of the accident just north of Fort Mac late last week. One of my wife's close friends, 24 year old son was killed in it. The funeral is Monday so we stayed how many to attend and my wife will be helping with stuff. Any hoo, the boys sent me this this afternoon, what a bugger for Jesse, they got to 12 yards and no rush, Buck got up and was very relaxed Jesse said it was just perfect but it was not to be. He figures he must have had a twig in the cam and as he drew the string came off the cam. Jordan had left his bow a ways behind and did the fibstock with just the camera. Too bad it would have been a nice animal with a bow.

Nice buck there Terry.  Too bad you could not make the trip.  The "war department" worked with the young guys grandmother at the school.  Unfortunate that the boys weren't able to get more than pictures.  I lost the urge to hunt mulies many years ago, when a friend & I knocked down a good sized buck.  I have never smelled anything quite like it, including elk or moose.  Puked a couple of times gutting and skinning it.  Buddy said that the meat was excellent, however, a friend who was on the receiving end of some of that buck commented on how rank the house got when the meat was being cooked.  Since that experience I have left them alone.

Must have been a conola fed animal they can get rank. We took a couple grass fed animals over the years now and I have to say it is some of the best wild meat out there. I have no issues with it at all.

Sorry to hear about the young lad, prayers to his family and your wife. To bad about the muly, sounds like you and the boys had a great time this year though. I know what little time I got this hunting season with my two little girls (25 and 20 ) was all that mattered. From following you on this site sounds like you have a couple fine young men, nice to see that in today's times.
