Archery Antelope - best dates for decoying?
« on: June 25, 2011, 11:37:14 PM »
Have heard a bit about the one week where the decoying success is the highest, with limited reponse before and after. Any observations out there of specific dates when decoying is best. I have heard 3rd week of September.

September 17th is about the best time to decoy antelope that I've found.  I'd say the 16-22nd would be a good stretch that would cover a guy well....

Sept 11 is the best date.  I would recommend the first week as the lopers tend to get wise after a week of everybody running around with a decoy.

I would say the 14-19 were the most succesful days for us !!  If you can get off the roads, walk in as far as needed and you will likely have better chances .. bring lots of arrows !! one of the funnest hunts going ...

Depop,

I've had three archery tags, and focused on using a decoy for most of the hunting. It is some of the most exciting hunting in Alberta.

All three times the Pronghorn's reaction to decoys was similar. Before the 17th, a few bucks would decoy, most were completely uninterested. Suddenly the switch would be turned on, and most bucks would come in. I would say the peak for decoying is the 16-20.

Some advice, tell your friends to practice setting up the decoy and shooting quickly. Things can happen very fast. And they need to practice shooting at five to ten yards. Many people don't practice these extremely close shots, and yes, a person can miss a three yard shot. I forget why I know that. :o

The best time is Sept 16th at precisely 10:21 Am. Unless it is a new Moon then the time is the 12th at 5:38PM.

Sorry I couldn't resist.

And full disclosure: I know nothing about decoying and this is a joke.

I would think the best time would be anytime you can get out of work and go....  :)
