Axe's 2011 Nov Bush WT Hunt

We just got back yesterday from our camp in WMU 350 after a dozen days in the bush. This year was sure a mixed bag of weather for us. We had wet snow and wind to begin with, then some real cold (-28 C) days, followed by some more wind. The bush was so coated in snow hanging on the trees it was tough to see in the bush at all. Even walking the the cutlines was a mess with all the bent over snow coated willows blocking the trails and narrow cutlines. The wolves were thick as thieves where we were and made more territorial scrapes than the deer. There is a very serious wolf problem in WMU 350 and I feel the deer are going to be further decimated this winter It was a tough year for sure hunting whitetails in the bush. The older age class of bucks that were plentiful last year are all gone as Nube noticed as well.
I saw a number of bucks but opportunities were limited and I ended up shooting an average buck in the thick bush one late afternoon after I spooked him up. I had one shooting lane in the thick poplars as he ran away from me. He turned and ran right into my shooting lane and stopped, bad for him! One shot in the heart and he bolted about 50 more yards before piling up. I did see one really good buck during the first week but he got away in the bush before I could kill him. My partners were holding out for a good buck and passed on a few average ones but the big bucks were just not there. Oh well, supplemental does make good sausage.
On a real positive note, we did see a ton of moose including 6 easily shootable bulls with a couple of truly big guys in the mix. We had no moose tags this year so they were haunting us. Lots of cows all with big healthy calves too. Next year when we should get a bull tag or two it should be a cinch. Getting the elk earlier this year will keep us eating good.
We had a cozy warm camp again this year with the wall tent and lots of good dead standing tamarack and pine firewood. We needed the pine just to mix with the tamarack as that stuff burns crazy hot. Great food with lots of barbeques thanks to Trevor made the trip quite enjoyable. I got a chance to do quite a bit of exploring and found some new cool areas.
I still like bush hunting and will probably never hunt the open country ever.
BTW, congrats too all you members that had good hunts when I was away as well.

Great report Axe. I looked for a Mule deer for you while I was up there and couldn't fine one over 140". Saw a lot more Mule bucks than normal but they were all rats. It seems like the big bush country is a tough hunt for a decent buck for the next couple years,.

Congrats on your success Axe.
Hunting for moose over in 351 and only seen 2 sets of wolf tracks in 200km. TONS of deer sign, not very much for moose sign. We were out there when they got their first snow fall and there was NO moose tracks at all, and today we only seen old tracks and not very many. One camp we went into had 4 moose hides tho, they must of pulled out a day or two ago.

Yes, nice meeting you in person as well. You sure camp close to some monster deer....lol. Too bad we couldn't have given you a close look at that buck. I was still in a bit of shock when I met you after just seeing that buck (the one we missed).

Thanks for the story and pics, nice buck as well. I agree the pedators are making it tough on ungulate populations. They may not be as noticeable but the cougars are exploding in numbers as well.
