Back from elk hunting
« on: September 20, 2011, 10:40:06 AM »
Well managed to get out for the opener, opening morning walked in, had a few cows and 2 small bulls around, bugled back and forth with a bull across a slough. He tried to circle around us and I caught up to him, beautiful 5 x 5, and I missed him  :(

Was heartbreaking.

Next morning had 2 small bulls come in to 20 yards, then heard later in the afternoon someone shot that big 5 x 5 on a hayfield not far away.

All in all was a decent hunt though, just a bit heartbreaking as I don't have much time to get out this year and won't have time to get out for elk again.

Attached crappy phone photo of small bull that came in.

Still sounded like there was some action.  My elk hunts usually end with no sightings.  LOL

It's always great when you are able to call them in Paul. I played with a couple of bulls this weekend but couldn't get the big one I wanted to leave his harem. I had a dandy 6X6 come into about 150 yards, but he was pretty cautious... I'm guessing he had already been run by Mr. Big! I'm always amazed at how stealthy those big elk are... perhaps my favorite animal to hunt.

That's why the call it hunting, sorry it didn't work out. There was a bit of hunting pressure that kept the bulls hiding in my neck of the woods. I heard lots of bugling and had a few 5x5 come out but no 6 pointers. Hopefully the rut heats up this weekend and the hunters thin out a bit.
