Black bear down May 15
« on: May 18, 2011, 12:19:21 PM »
I shot this sow at 9 pm over my bait Sunday evening. Never had a tree stand and I never wanted to risk a ground blind getting damaged, so I sat up against a spruce tree on the ground. Got to my bait at 3:00 pm so I had to wait 6 hours. Bear came in downwind sniffing the air to my extreme right, so I couldn't shoot till she got closer to the barrel. 25 yard shot behind the shoulder with a 130 gr Hornady out of a .270 put it right on its back. I followed up with 2 insurance shots and the bear was done like dinner. Heres some pics. Hide squares at 5'4" and is at the taxidermists being tanned. Will get the skull done as well. Kept one hind quarter to try and gave the other one to a friend that eats bear. If I don't like it he can have the other quarter as well.

Save a tree, kill a beaver.

Congrats!!  Great looking bear.  Not sure I could sit by a tree near a bait though.  LOL

Thats a nice bear moosehunter!! I personally am terrified of bears, but plan on over comming that fear this hunting season...the bf and I are going out this weekend.  If you have any tips I'd love to hear them.  We don't have bait set up or anything...

Where are you hunting them? If you are going up to northern Alberta for spot and stalk 2pm-dark should be the most productive time to see them out on cutlines. They are near sighted so as long as the wind is good getting into rifle range isn't a big issue. Good luck.

We'll be up in the Northern Alberta area, north of Westlock.  Thanks for the tips! We'll use them for sure! And I personally had no idea they are near sighted, that makes me feel much better! :) Thanks!

Congratulations Moosehunter! I may be in the minority, but I love bear meat. I've had meat from both fall and spring bears and I found it to be exceptional. A friend gave me a bit of a lesson on how to cook them up and I don't think I would try any other method. I roast them until they are well done, leaving a bit of fat on to add to the moisture. I then take the roast and cut it into steaks and sear them on the BBQ adding seasoning salt or BBQ sauce until they are browned (This gets rid of that excess fat). The last bear that I got (a younger fall  black bear) might have been the best game I have ever eaten... honestly.

If you find the taste a little strong (it depends on what they may have been eating), you can easily mix in some pork butt, grind it and spice it up a bit for sausages or patties. Sometimes I wish I didn't have to take the dang hide!
