Chilcotin Hunting
« on: January 27, 2014, 11:39:04 AM »
I'm new to the site and mentioned in my introduction about hunting in the Chilcotin area of BC. Sounds like there is interest so I'm going to try posting some recent and not so recent pictures of hunting there. I can't seem to find alot of the pictures I have, possibly on a different computer.

My first trip there was with my Dad and a couple Uncles at the age of 12 (I guess that's 25 years ago now!). I'm the third generation to hunt out of the cabin shown, my Granddad hung the door in the cabin when they built it and it's still square as ever. Since then my best friend who I started hunting with has joined the camp, probably about 20 years ago now. We mostly hunt moose in the area with horseback, and then pack horses when we down one. Quads have come into play in the past 10 years or so, providing good access to a couple local lakes for fishing, and poking around to access deer hunting areas.

So the following pics are a few of the moose we've taken in the past few years, the cabin and coral, some camp areas away from the cabin, and some random shots of the area. I hope you enjoy.

When I find the others I'll post them up.

Otherwise it'll have to wait until after this years hunt!

I'll post a thread about my Alberta hunting as well. I have an old '77 Dodge camper van in really good shape that I spend weekends hunting out of. Works great as it has a furnace/stove/fridge/etc, and just enough room to lay a couple deep down on the floor to get them back to the garage.

Thanks guys! Yes, it's quite a special place and I have a ton of memories there. One of my Uncles brings a video camera every year and with that footage, and footage some of us take on our little cameras, he splices it all together and we end up with about an hour video of each year! This works well as it seems every year has a bit of a different "theme", or common thread that ties the time spent there each year together. Helps you differentiate one year from the others!

Here are a few other pics I have, which are older scanned photos. You'll see we don't go hungry that's for sure. And the one picture is with my Dad as we're riding back down a draw towards the meadow in front of the cabin/corral.

So this years hunting season in BC is coming with it's own set of challenges. Due to the recent supreme court ruling providing the First Nations with land titles and rights to economic benefits in and around the Nemaiah Valley, the BC government has paused the limited entry hunt draws until they can sort out how and/or whether the draws can now take place.

The area we hunt shown above is WMU 5-04, with Nemaiah Valley falling in the far western portion of the unit. The valley leads to Chilko Lake (the western boundary of 5-04) and heads east to the Taseko Lakes area. Our cabin is east of the river feeding Taseko Lakes, however I'm hoping we're not up the proverbial creek.

The government right now appears to be looking at the draws in 5-04 entirely. My thoughts are move the western boundary of 5-04 east to Taseko Lakes, thus removing the Nemaiah Valley from 5-04 all together, and adjust the number of tags drawn accordingly in relation to the percentage downsize of the WMU, but that may just be too simple...

Here's to hoping we can continue to hunt there. It would be a sad, sad day if we couldn't.

Best of luck, that's going to turn into a real mess that will no doubt spread like a virus.

Well maybe, maybe not it's hard to say. The Indians may start their own hunting operations and it may be affordable who knows. But I do know what you mean when you say this could get ugly..

Yep good luck with that one, some folks just don't seem to have enough and the rest of my opinion I'll keep to myself.

I'm not even looking to go with an outfit, we have our own. Just want the season to be drawn.

Hell, we've had to chase the pit-lamping "locals" off our land.

Great news! The government has proceeded with the draws in the WMU and we have two moose tags in camp this year! The other four of us will have mule deer tags in our pockets so hopes are it will be another successful hunt.

In all honesty, just being up there with family and my best friend from growing up makes the trip, and having some meat hanging at the end of the trip is a bonus.

I'll be sure to post pictures to share from this years adventure.

Now onto doing some more scouting for me Southern Alberta fall deer hunts. I appreciate everyone's feedback in my 412/414 thread, it's helping alot.

So how is it that you can hunt BC every year?  Are you being hunter hosted by family members or something?
