elk or mule deer?
« on: January 25, 2012, 09:59:48 AM »
From Ontario, have a chance to visit Alberta and asking the question: would you try mule deer or elk hunt ?
Have tasted your elk and it is going to be hard to beat! (Also had some Moose)
How do the mule deer compare for table fare?
Tags?
Success ratio for each?
I know these are all loaded questions but any suggestions appreciated!
Thanks

For taste- elk wins hands down.  For a fun hunt with lots of oppurtunity I would chase Mule Deer.  If you are hunting with a bow then both tags are readily available during archery season, if its during the general season then you will need to get drawn for Mule Deer in most areas of Alberta.  The success rates are much higher on Mule Deer and you will have oppurtinity to harvest one or 2 every day.

What part of the province will you be hunting in?

to answer your questions.....i would try to hunt both.  lots of opportunity, but where you live might make one more accesible.  for taste, elk beats mule deer any day for me.  tags are available over the counter for both in a lot of places, and draws exist too for better trophy opportunity in some areas.  mue deer have a much higher success ratio.  you are going to be amazed at how simple these things are.  no comparison in brain power for a mule compared to their cousins.
opinions are like sphincters......everyone has one, and they all stink!

Every day of the week I would hunt mule deer if I could. Saying that I have never killed an elk so I may be slightly bias. I recomend hunting with Weste is you can. He makes it much easier Haahahahahaha. To be honest though both are going to be a blast!
Quote from Howard Hill.( Whenever he taught someone to shoot) "Son make up your mind right now if you want to target shoot or hunt as theres a world of differance between the two"

Hope this goes over well....

Weste, have a contact for area 523? which is where they got their elk last year. Know very little about your part of the country. Hunt deer and moose here at home, have done the caribou hunt in winter as well as snow geese at James bay.
Looking to see/experience as much of our country as I can. Not looking for wall trophies, just trophy memories.
Depending on type of hunt would like to bring my dad who is 80+ (a memory trophy in itself)
Appreciate the feed backs, thanks
