Explain cadomin and bison tags to me.
« on: September 04, 2013, 05:39:06 PM »
I'm not trying to be a dick, I really don't get it.  What's the magical fascination with the cadomin tag?  You can hunt trophy sheep with an over the counter tag every single year.

Same with bison, sans the tag.

So what's the big deal?  I've always assumed they must be, "easier", a "given", thus the demand?  It seems there are never ending complaints about these two tags and I simply don't understand why there should be when you can hunt either species every single year.  Can't tell me there aren't good animals taken every year with the general trophy tag or bison.  I personally know of some massive bison taken last winter that didn't involve a tag.  I did take a lot of effort, though.  Is that all there is to it, or is there something I don't know?
thanks.

One would think it's the ease of the hunts. Not to say that either hunt is easy but I would think they would be easier than the alternatives..

Just my thinking.

Cadomin draw= late season sheep hunting. The opportunity to hunt trophy sheep in the rut, and in the area where world records have been set is pretty appealing to me.

Bison- the draw is more about convenience, although still not easy. Hunting them in the "open areas" not requiring a license, is not a small undertaking. Also, I'm pretty sure Bison taken without a license are not eligible for Boone and Crockett.

So a bison shot just outside of wood buffalo wouldn't qualify for the record books? Seems strange to me as it would be under fair chase situations.

I don't think so. I believe only trophies taken under the authority of a hunting license qualify....but I could be wrong.

Ya but I wonder if a letter from F&W stating that the season is open on the Wood Buffalo herd that wondered out of the park would suffice?

There has to be a designated hunting season and hunting licence in place. I have heard that several people have tried to enter Buffalo in the B&C but the trophies were not taken under the authority of a hunting licence so they were not elgible. The only "Border line" elgible trophies I have heard of that they will accept is the cull buffalo hunt in Custer State park.

Why is there several entries labeled "found" or "picked up"
