Good Hunting/Target Shooting Rifle
« on: July 17, 2020, 04:16:27 PM »
Hi thinking of buying a rifle that will be good for some longer range target shooting and also a good hunting rifle that will take down game as large as Moose.

I know the 338, 7mm and 300 win mag have been considered for this but ammo is expensive for target shooting.

I’ve heard the 6.5 creedmoor mentioned but some say is too small for moose.

Opinions would be appreciated. I can’t really afford a rifle for each situation right now.

280 rem.
Anything a 270 can do a 280 does a little better.
Have used mine for moose /elk/bear/ and long range deer

If you reload you can get just about the performance as a 7 mag with half the recoil and cost of ammo

If ammo expense is a main consideration I would consider a .308
Its plenty for big game hunting and you can get way more range time with the cost of ammo.

Back to the OP.

What is your definition of "Long Range shooting"?

How far do you want to go out and touch something? 200 yards. 400yards,.. the diagonal of a quarter section?

Perhaps we should start with baby steps.

Shooting out to 1000 yds.

Hunting normal distances the long range stuff is just for fun.

My son wants to do it and we like to shoot together.

Just wondering if there are calibres that will do both.

A .338 Lapua is your answer.

A bit cheaper than the .50 Barrett.

Not sure if these calibers are currently legal. Silly things like muzzle energy.

They are under Justin's assault looking like juice box thingy guns.

308 as has been mentioned is hard to beat really.

The 6.5 Creedmoor is also very good actually amazing really.

Factory ammo is incredibly good for both, I have pards that run factory ammo in PRS Using 6.5 it’s that good.
