Hammered 2 deer this morning Nov. 11
« on: November 11, 2011, 03:32:20 PM »
I went to our favourite mule deer spot for some still hunting. I got drawn for antlered mule deer this year, so I was looking to fill that tag. Started walking in slowly at shooting light. Worked my way to the back end of the quarter section to a hill top. I seen a mule buck running 275-300 yards away on my left. Was a small 3X3. He was out of sight before I had time for a shot, but I looked at the hillside he came from and seen 3 deer. I figured right on, theres the rest of the mules, I'm sure one of those is a buck. Get them scoped and realize they have white bellies. Thats ok cause I got a tag for those kind too lol. The 3 whitetails ran on the far side of the slough where the mulie was. At pretty close to 300 yards, a massive doe stopped and faced me. A frontal shot isn't easy at 300 yards, but I took a shot off shooting sticks with the .270 Win. My bullet hit her perfect in the chest, took out one lung and broke the front shoulder. She wasn't making very good time, so I shot at her once more and ended up breaking a back leg right above the scent gland lol. Note to self, at 300 yards you should lead a lot more. Even with 2 broken legs, she still made it 60 yards or so with no blood trail. I was hunting a property thats basically a open pasture with rolling hills and clumps of trees at the bottom of the hills. Usually it's a good spot for mule deer. Because it's a nice open area, I was able to keep my eyes on her direction of travel and finding her was no problem. She's a massive doe, her body is bigger then my mule deer's body haha.

My mule deer story happened around an hour and a half later. It's much less exciting. I went to another chunk of private property we have permission on and was going to push bush for our hunting partner. My dad pointed out a mule deer on the trail where we walk in to push. I noticed it had antlers, so I got the .270 up. I was waiting for him to turn broadside, but he started walking away from me. I ended up trying out my first ever texas heart shot What can I say, texas heart shots work pretty damn good! No tracking at all hahahaha. 100 yard shot.

Save a tree, kill a beaver.
