Made the most of my one day!
« on: November 17, 2017, 06:46:58 PM »
The day finally arrived.
I got a early start and just cruised lease roads untill I found decent deer sign.
Luckily it had snowed just enough last night to ensure any tracks I seen were fairly fresh.
I headed down a cutline a couple hundred yards and did some rattling.
A doe made an appearance about 30mins after I got set up and luckily this guy was on her trail.
Not a monster but decent and I am more then happy with him considering my time restraints.

Very nice Hammer, good job.

Hit them hard over the weekend and last 4 days couldn't rattle up a ghost. Saw a few smaller ones but none that interested me. Have to head back to work mid next week so might hit the stand in the back 40 a couple times so we will see.

Bit again, well done Hammer.

Thanks walleyes.
Mostly a matter of timing with a touch of luck.
Just remember the worst day hunting beats the best day at work.
Good luck out there.

Right on Hammer that's a nice buck and you got him with a Swiss K31,cool. :)

I recently bought a case of GP11 for mine and I also have a few boxes of PPU 174gr. softpoints but I haven't hunted with my K31..Those rifles are darn heavy but deadly accurate.

What type of ammo did you use? It looks like it preformed well.

Ya it's fun to switch it up sometimes.
I used 180gr Norma but it's damn hard to find over here.
Punched right through that buck at approximately 200yrds.
Taken a couple deer and a bear with this combo with no complaints.

I did not know tradex carried that in Norma.
That's great news.
The stuff I have is from the late 70's judging by the box style.

I rough green scored him at aprox gross 156-158 range.

Thank you for the picture Hammerspur.

You have already invested a fair amount of work into your trophy at this point.

I was wondering if you could share the next steps that you will be undertaking to create your piece of art. :)

Thank you again

Thanks all for the kind words.
Sure greylynx I can do that.
From what I understand and am doing is basically just skin and flesh it as much as possible then boil it 2-3 times for 3-4 hrs each time with a little dish soap removing as much flesh as possible in between boils.
Here he is about to go in for round one.
I have not really decided on a display option yet be it a plaque/hook etc.
If I had the space a little driftwood display with some foliage etc would be nice.
But I just moved from a two story house and garage to a mobile home so cluttered is a understatement ,that ain't happening.
Still have a bear half mount sitting on the deep freeze.lol

Wrap the bases with about 4" of tinfoil. Or else they will get discolored. 3-4 hours 3 times is over kill and the bones will start to separate.

Thanks for the tips Guido.
I only got to simmer him for a couple hrs yesterday before I got called away from it on more pressing matters.
I did not submerge any antler at that time so they still look good but I will wrap em for round two.

Thanks for the walk through. Gotta love this site where a hunter can come on here, show us his game project and not get beat up about it. Keep it coming Hammer. And good job boys and girls, for keeping us all on the same team.

Just the steam will discolor, even if not submerged.

Nice buck, Hammer!

Adding some washing soda (sodium carbonate), not to be confused with baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) really helps to remove the flesh and fat when boiling.
You can pick it up in the ARM AND HAMMER brand almost anywhere.  This stuff really does make a difference.
I think I see a rip in the social fabric, Brother can you spare some ammo?
