Moose rut fun
« on: September 20, 2017, 04:01:38 PM »
First moose tag for the kid(19). First try with a bow. Sunday we got the smaller of a 3 nice bulls to 6 ish yards. Hard to take when there are two much larger in the hood. Plus we have till Nov 30th to fill a freezer. Very exciting Sunday morning with myself, the kid and my friend who owns the property. Hope we don't regret letting a golden chance go. Darn rain has kept us home for any evening hunts. May have to get wet tomorrow. Won't let me post a pic even though I resized it. I hate computers

Right on Sooner, by the looks of things you can be picky for a while. Glad your getting time with your boy, and watch him get his first moose.

Ooooh some nice animals there boy. 1 small moose in the pot is better than 10 big ones walking around in the bush I always say. Best of luck to you guys I hope it doesn't come back to bite yah in the ass.  I don't know what the bull cow ratio is around there but one thing to keep in mind is as the rut starts those big bulls are the first to cow up and good Luck trying to get one to leave a cow and come in. They will travel a long ways from their summer feeding grounds to find a cow. Just a couple things to keep in mind.

I'm the same Walleyes, I am a meat eater(not that your not OP) so I don't think I could let that one get away. I have been laugh at by some hunting buddies at times for taking smaller animals, but I also eat meat most winters, while tag soup is on their plates. Each their own though, I support all legal hunting and the people that hunt their way.

Those are some beauty animals, and glad to hear you're able to share in your son's first moose kill. I remember the first one I took out of the Chilcotin with my Dad and looking forward to hopefully having more luck again this fall in a few weeks.

I'm the same as most you guys, I'd rather have a nice tasty smaller one on the ground than watching a beast walk away. With a young family at home I'm not flush with spare time. Good healthy meat in the freezer for my family is number one.

When we came back and I showed my dad(81) the videos, he said 1 in the truck is better than 2 in the bush. I have been hearing that saying for 30 yrs, I pass on small bucks waiting for a nice one, he shoots the first one. At the end of the season he says I got meat...You? :)

All in fun but ya, i hope it don't haunt us. Rut is just going, so why not try for a bigger one for his first. As I say, he can spend the rest of his hunting career in the crown land trying to beat his first . And we have all of Nov to find a meat bull. We should be out for half of friday and each day on the weekend so fingers crossed.

Wow that's a wicked cool pic sooner. Kudos to your boy for having the nerve to hold off on that bull, I know I wouldn't have the nerve to.

Before the season I told him it's his tag, his call. We will get on some moose, you get to decide which one. Big or small, No pressure from me. So then 2 brutes show up on cam including the one we let walk. Decisions decisions  :). If that was our go to Northern zone where moose numbers are slim, that first one would not have gotten such a quick pardon. I hope I'm not posting in late Nov wondering where all the moose went lol.

Out again Friday afternoon, most of Saturday and Sunday morning were spent walking the trails(within an hour of the city so makes for some easy trips out and home for a bit). Had some sneakers, 1 come in full tilt at last light before he winded us, couple talkers and finally seen one of the Mr Big boys out there. And called another bull in the exact same location as the one posted to about 100 yrds. Just
a bit smaller rack. 30 km's on the boots in 3 days. Moose fun.

Pic is when the hot & heavy bull was coming, grunting hard. We had to back track to this bog for a possible shooting area but he held up behind the ridge of trees and went quiet, we were running out of light & figured he winded us as the wind was blowing to him so we snuck out and returned in the am but he was not to be seen.

Loving the post sooner, keep us up to date please can't wait to see the pic of the bull when you guys get em.

Don't want to hightjack your thread but this may give your boy some incentive to hold out. Friend of mine from out in Northern Ontario sent me this pic this afternoon, he arrowed it today. Put the stock on it to 30 yards.

TOO Hot out there tonite, checked the cam at least. More smaller bulls graced the camera. First one fogged up the camera with his breath first...DOH.  I think we called him out last Sunday to about 100 yrds. Bit smaller than the one posted in front of my son. Cold weather is 2 days away but we are back at it tomorrow and Sunday. May have to call in sick Monday :) Fun Fun chasing Bullwinkle.
