My Boys First Moose
« on: January 18, 2013, 09:24:49 AM »
After a 5 year wait I drew an early season moose tag for wmu 358. As luck would have it this was the year that my oldest turned 12 and after completing his hunter training course was able to carry a rifle while hunting with me this year. He's been hunting with me since the age of 5 so he was really pumped that he could finally have a chance at shooting something finally.  When I told him that I was going to partner him on my moose tag you'd think that christmas came early. We've done alot of elk hunting together and during that time we found alot of pockets that hold moose. So first weekend of the season we head out to our number 1 spot. After walking and calling for a couple of hours with no luck we deicide to head to a differant spot. As we were walking back to the truck down a major pipeline a bull moose walks out of the black spruce right in front of us at 75 yards. I quickly told him to get ready as I dropped my pack for a rest. As he lined up on the moose using the pack as a rest I stood prone backing him up in case of a miss or a bad hit. After what seemed like an eternity he let loose. Watching through my scope I saw the bullet hit perfectly right behind the shoulder. The moose staggered at the hit and began to run across the pipeline. Knowing it was a perfect hit I didn't shoot and told my son as such as he was unsure of where he hit. The moose didn't even make it across the pipeline when he began the wobbly run and down he went. As we waited a few minutes to make sure he didn't get up there were alot of high fives and congrats. As we walked up to him all my son could say was "Are you sure I made a good shot?". All I could do was point to the dead moose and say "What do you think?". As we admired the moose I realized that there was no way you could wipe the smile off of my son's face. I've hunted alot of years and shot alot of animals but I must say that nothing will compare with this hunt. It was the best hunting day I've ever had.

Great story and congrats.  That partner tag is a great thing.
I think I see a rip in the social fabric, Brother can you spare some ammo?

Thanks for sharing.  Congratulations to you both!

You'll be the hunting guide for the next few years, and as great as that is, it's even better when your son get's in his 20's and you get to hunt as partners.  What you're teaching him now he'll carry for his life, and he'll pass it on.  It's all good;  the way it should be.  Way to go, Dad!
