Opinions Please.
« on: May 29, 2014, 07:30:59 PM »
Looking for some input from some of the boys that run the West Country some what. The boy is sitting on a priority 6 on his antlered moose and I just don't know what to do, go into somewhat known territory but I know they hand out quite a few tags for that area so it my be busy. Or maybe try 525 north of Worsley which I know holds decent numbers and you need atleast a priority 5 or what are some other options. Leave out all north west zones from 525 north as I know all these zones like the back of my hand and am looking for something possibly a little different.

Just looking for some options here people.

You know back in the good old days where you could just go and buy a moose tag I would say go forth and explore new areas.
Now with the draw system I can't say that anymore. Your son is almost guaranteed a tag in areas like 353 354 etc. with a P6 but how well do you know the area?
Hmm...I think I would hunt the place that I know best because tags are hard to come by these days and you don't want to waste a tag.

Or you could go deer hunting in a new area and scout for moose at the same time. ;)

Well that the thing hey, we want to get good use out of this tag but at the same time maybe use it for something special. With the boys and I we may never end up with a priority this high again, it's just threw Jordan's collage and then his new job that we ended up with it now I hate to just drop it on a regular two year zone you know.

Just throwing this out there as an option:  with P6 you can get a tag in some of the eastern prairie zones or more farming areas.  Not much of a hunt (IMO) compared to hunting the boreal, and people everywhere but more like ask a couple ranchers with cattle(fences) and they'll likely tell you where to look for moose, spot one, shoot one, drive up to it and throw it in the truck;  one less moose to walk through their fences.  (again, just my opinion).

Again, my opinion a lot better chance of getting one than an unknown area in the boreal.

Not my personal cup of tea, but then I'll never get P6, haha.  On the flip side son has about P11 due to commitments.  If he ever actually can get leave for certain his plan with that priority is Wainwright.

A large part of the reason for my bearhunt this spring was to spot a new area for moose.  Looked good on maps/googleearth, and I knew the general area, but turned out way too much traffic to bother hunting moose there, so our search continues;  although it'll continue with a P1 tag.  I wouldn't go somewhere blind with P6 myself.

I agree with Bruce, there are a few big bulls in the prairie zones and farmers are always looking for someone to thin them out.  Maybe do some hardcore scouting for the next few weeks and get access before making a decision.

A prairie zone would be fun if you had some connections to know where to hunt. I am saving my priority for a SW zone. Lots of fun hunting down there!

Yah,, prairie zones, would be out of the question boys,, were not into a turkey shoot we have to be out in the bush doing our thing. Waaaayyyy to busy around them parts for us lol..

But hey thx for helping with ideas though boys. The more we think about it, it's looking like 525 or maybe just head into 527, I know 527 country well but it's a regular zone,, it's a priority 2 zone. We will see. But keep them coming boys.

I am in the process of buying a trapline near fox creek.  I was scouting in area 353 the other day and there was some decent moose sign.  I then looked at the number of tags and I can see they give out a pile of them but I think it has a decent number of moose.  If you need a place to stay the night there let me know.  You could some check a few traps with me as well possibly

I own land in 527, as long as you are headed to deep bush, there are some great bulls around.  Any of the cultivated land in the zone gets hammered.
