Reminder Draw Deadline June 18th
« on: June 17, 2020, 08:11:05 PM »
Don't forget to get your draws in the system.
I am in for a moose again at our farm.  Doing it smart in these new long wait draw times.
Priority 1 will get me my moose meat.  Got the new slug gun (deadly last year) and sections of permission with bushes full of moose.  Last year we got the one on my brothers tag on our own property.  Study the draw stats and don't wait half your life for a draw. I miss the northwest country bull hunts, but whatever, not wasting the rest of my life waiting for it.
999 on the rest for this year.  Got some big priorities on elk and mule deer coming up for future years.
I think I see a rip in the social fabric, Brother can you spare some ammo?

Got mine all in. Definitely use the previous years of summaries for planning is key. I’m building priority again for the most part. Should have trophy lope and turkey this year (P11 & P12). Trying a newer zone for mule deer this year as I’m not waiting 9yrs anymore for a mule deer draw I got my 200” so I’m good now.
What ever happened to 350 moose tags axeman...? Sure a decrease in tags

SnapShot,  ya my old 350 zone has been one of the ones to suffer greatly reduced tags and much longer wait times.
Quota is now 10 calling season, and 14 November tags for the whole big zone.  That makes calling season a 8-9 year wait and November a 6 year wait now.
We used to get November tags there every second year on a priority 1 and with a couple of guys, we could hunt every year for a bull.
Two things happened.  A huge reduction in the quota of tags and ever increasing draw pressure and built up 999 priority pools.
There is a lot of moose there still, but for a few years there was heavy wolf predation and perhaps hunting success due to increased access and drier years.  That should be changing now.
We will have to trust the aerial surveys and game management, but with the government pressured to include native and metis harvest in their data and some resolve to add that to their conservation planning.

With that reality now on us we can hunt at home for anterless moose on priority 0 and 1's and have a chance for a member of our hunting group to slowly build priority to a 6 so we can go back and hunt a November bull in 350.  That may happen next year if the required priorities do not take another jump up.

Got mine in yesterday. 999 all but a hail mary at Camp Wainwright. Highly doubt we will draw but its a better chance than 999 :).

Got over 14 points on Ant MD and Trophy Antelope to think about soon. Couple more years and my son will have enough points so we can chase them together.

It will be general elk and WT for me this year revisiting some haunts west of whitecourt and sitting for bucks in Nov.

Sooner, best of luck on your plans for the season. You are probably just like the rest of us old warriors.
Even though it is tough to get a good bull moose tag, the enjoyment of chasing other open draws for elk and WT are barely a compromise.
The older we get (speaking for myself...lol), the old days of slogging into remote wall tent camps and working like dogs every single year is more of a young mans game.
We used to be those young guys that had the dedication and resolve to support our elder moose gods.
I find now that the younger generation of guys that went in with us are just lacking that dedication now and have life excuses that take priority.

I find that for me now that most of my moose goals have been achieved, chasing WT bucks is enough for me.

We are going for two moose tags again this year, should get them in the zone we are headed. 999 everything else.

I haven’t shot a moose in 350 in 12-13yrs. I have hunted up there all my life but gave up the moose hunting up there. If you are a 6 and want to shoot a grain fed bull up to 50-55” give me a holler before next draw application. Can get it done in 1 day on a great grain fed bull.

999 for everything this year to much uncertainty right now to risk not being able to use a draw this fall.
Noticed I'm at priority 10 for Wainwright whitetail , never been but gonna have to get on that soon.
