There's a movement on FB  on Alberta Hunting pages
  Alberta Waterfowl Addicts
petitioning the Feds to have a Sandhill Crane season
 In Alberta .
I shot quite a few in Manitoba , ugly but pretty tasty
they call them Ribeye of the sky ....

How do you cook a sandhill crane?

Well, that is an old recipe that is quite famous.
First you must find 3 or 4 good smooth hard rocks and put in the pot with the crane.
Add some spices and other ingredients to your taste and boil hard for 3 to 4 hours.

Drain, and throw out the crane and enjoy the rocks.

Actually, never tasted one so no idea how they would be.

My father used to say that they ate them back in the day. This is going back to the depression days when they could or  did anyways hunt year round. But he said mid summer and early fall they would shoot the small ones and they were decent but the older ones were very smelly and fishy tasting.
