SHEEP HUNTING PLANS 2012
« on: July 26, 2012, 02:29:28 PM »
Well we just recently clicked into the last month countdown to sheep season and i thought id see how many guys are in the final planning stages of hunts for the opening week?

My 12 year old son and I have been planning on hunting the opening couple days as well as the few days pror to season. We are looking into a brand new area that we havent hunted or actually been into. Its an area that ive never seen mentioned on any formus and never even heard of anyone hunting. I know in the 60's and 70's it used to produce some monsters but it seems as though its a forgoten gem or the guys hunting are just very very good at keeping it quiet.
Anyways our first scouting trip is an overnighter next week so Im really hoping it turns out to be a decent area. If not it will be back to the old stomping grounds. Biggest thing is I want to get him to an area with minimal pressure to try and avoid any of the opening day footraces. Either way its going to be a riot out there hunting with him for his first ever sheep hunt where he gets to pack a gun.

Anyone else have any big plans? I know this forum has been a bit slow as most here are pretty busy outside or working but I thought maybe a sheep thread of some sort would perk the comments up!

Cheers
SG

Sounds like your off to a good start.  Sometime thoose area's turn out to be hidden gems that you will tell nobody about (but me lol).  Either way I am sure you and your son will have a great trip, take lots of pictures.  Can't wait to do the same thing once my son is old enough.

Oh it will be awesome. Its going to be my 23rd year holding a big game tag and 20th seaon holding a sheep tag in my pocket(had to site two years after my two rams and missed the first season due to when my birthday was.) and this year has been more anticipated than any of the rest. Best part is he doesnt care if the tag is used  he just loves being out there! Killing a sheep will just be a bonus. Has already told me hes holding out for good one but we will see what his decision is when/if we find a just legal ram. Be toatally his choice when to pull the trigger. He has seen a ton of rams over the years so I guess he has it figured what he wants.

I have been working on the legs to be be ready for the hills and slowly carrying more in the pack for my walks and working on the gear list. My regular hunting partners father is laying in the hospital and his date of passing will determine whether i have someone to go with for opener or not.
I also have a week in Sept and a week in Oct for Sheep hunting. First year with the new Eberlestock pack ,curious how i will like it after wearing the Arcteryx for 15yrs.

I'm rooting for Brylee on his first Ram Darcy , we sure enjoyed last years pics.

I'll be up north working until the 28th, going to try to slip out for a 2-3 day hunt sometime around the first week of Sept. with my daughter, it's her first year packing a gun too.  Then some buddies and I are planning to pack up the horses and head back in for 7-10 days the week after Thanksgiving.  Doesn't really hurt my feelings to miss the Aug. 25 gong show.

Planning to head out mid September for 4 or 5 days and can't wait.  Plan to do a little more exploring this year and hopefully finally connect.  Lord knows I'll end up just taking my gun for a walk but it can't come soon enough :).

I got a lead on an area in the Willmore and burnt 30km + worth of show leather a few weeks back. We're going to head out Aug. long weekend for another scout. This was going to be my plan B but with all the high water this summer I may bump it up to plan A. It didn't look like there was a lot of traffic in the area but the trails have been maintained so I'm suspecting an outfitter has been using the area. I booked off the opener so hopefully there isn't a ton of traffic in the area.

I haven't been on a back country sheep hunt for awhile so I'm starting to get the itch. Going to head out to the Nordegg or Cardinal river area as soon as the deer shed their velvet (gotta try and bow kill a velvet buck 1st) and try and knock a ram down with the bow. Haven't scored on a ram in a few years so I'm due. It's funny how when you have the sheep hunting bug you can't think of anything else until you get out in the mountains, then after a few hard days you can't wait to get back to the comforts of home...after you're home for about a day you start obsessing about getting back out there all over again!

I'm not ashmaed to admit that after 6 days in the mountains sleeping under trees or rock ledges, eating dehydrated food, being wet for days and enduring extreme physical exhaustion that I enjoy a hot shower and dozing off by the fireplace. Maybe I'm just getting old...

Myself I can't wait to get back to the comforts of base camp after a cold night or 2 under the stars.

Maybe after a 10 nights in the mountains dry clothes, hot shower and a bed would feel pretty darn good.

For sure, a good base camp makes all the difference. I usually just back pack in solo, so only the essentials come in with me, have to keep that weight down in case a ram needs to come out with me!

Like Darcy I'm looking into a new area. Was talking with a guy that has stopped sheep hunting and has taken several rams from a sleeper area. I managed to get the info out of him and almost said BS but instead said "your kidding me right". He was dead serious so it will be in need of a scouting trip. It will be different looking outside of the box that we are accustomed to looking into. Good luck young and old and us in the middle.

Good to see everyone getting all fired up for the upcoming season, nice pics to BTW.... They finally got the hay cut here where I set up my cams. I'll be hunting moose in the farmland this year and WT out of my treestand in the forestry.
I'll wait for the next overcast day to set up the camera's and maybe the skeeters won't carry me away. It's been a busy summer and no time for an early setup like last year.
I still have a month and a half to locate some moose for the season isn't open here until Oct 1st.

Good luck to all you guys out there on opening day!
