Successful season
« on: December 17, 2015, 09:24:04 PM »
For me, the season was long. I had a moose draw and had an objective to take a 55"+ bull.  It was a lofty goal but not impossible. Most of my mornings afield found me in a blind or stand after elk and the remainder of the days in search of bullwinkle. My shift had me at work and duties on the farm had me busy during peak rut, so I had to deal with friends and landowners texting me pics of the big bulls moving around. I was there before and after- same old story. One morning I had an equipment failure with my bow that cost me an opportunity to fill my elk tag. I was able to fix it up and the next morning was fortunate to harvest this guy.

Rifle season was not a slam dunk either. The warm weather and EXTREME hunting pressure drove the moose deep in the bush. Once we got first snow, I was able to track a few bulls down, but for various reasons, I didn't drop the hammer. I was starting to get nervous I would not fill my moose tag. I really wanted to try out my new 338 RUM, and was ready to drop my standards from the 55"+ goal. I did see 1 that was in that class, but was not presented an opportunity. Later in the rifle season I found that monster again. No permission on that land. I did obtain permission- but didn't see him again on that property. I knew where he was living, but he wasn't moving much and was in a safe area. In the end- literally in the last two hours I had to hunt moose in 2015, I closed the deal on this guy. He'll do!!

My main objective this fall was to guide my daughter to her first deer. She's in school and time was limited but we were determined! The  deer had vanished making things extra challenging but with persistence we found a few bucks. She ended up taking this guy. The 25-06 the kids share performed perfectly as always.

The whole family was there for the hunt so that was pretty special. What's cool was we found two HOGS that am but she opted to take this buck as it was in a good location where we could stalk him unseen and she could get an unrushed, ethical shot.

Overall, I'm happy with how our season turned out. Not a fantastic season for trophy whitetails, but there's always hope for next year!

Good stuff all around Doug. For the busy and shortened season you had it looks like it was a fun filled one as well.

Well done my man and a big congrats to you all.

Thanks guys. The icing on the cake was definitely Hannah sealing her deer tag. She's been at my side a lot in the outdoors. I didn't think I'd see the day when she wanted to harvest a deer. She always was partial to bird hunting and fishing. On the trap line she was a good luck charm. Every time she came with me, we came home with Wolves.

I ended up knocking down both the elk and moose while hunting alone. Good thing I am set up to handle situations like that or I'd still be out there packing quarters out!!

My only regret is we weren't able to find a decent whitetail buck for my son. There's always next year.
