Time To Switch Modes.
« on: August 23, 2017, 06:40:57 PM »
Now that the west coast trip is over the boat is all washed, shined and put away, I may head out for some fall walleye but will take the boy's boat or the older tub but for the most part the season is over until ice over.

Which means it's game on for hunting. The leaves are starting their transition from bright green to dark green/yellow. The nights ar getting cooler and the hunting bug is kicking in. Will be sighting in rifles next days off, will get the new trailer ready for the trip, have to build sides for it. Will be talking to the boss and lining up days off for the moose trip. Yup,, it's time to switch gears,, I love it.

Ya, I hear you.
I have 3 trail cams up now just for kicks around home.
I am going to jack the trailer up a bit and put some bigger wheels on it too.
Need to set up the wall tent and make a few internal frame adjustments.
Going back to 130 gr bullets in the .270 so I have to do some re-sighting as well.
I have a feeling there is going to be some decent WT bucks around this year, couple of easy winters.

I think your right on the bucks axe, was tempted to get up some trail cams as well but ran out of time, will get some up in 2 weeks when I'm home. I would think the last couple winters treated the herds well, hoping the same for moose as well. Hopefully they were able to kick the crap out of a few wolves too. I have to get out for a goose shoot this year, my boy was getting the gear ready when I left, it looks like it's going to be a great year for geese, flock after flock already around home.

Question:

Is it only us hunting fishing types that get the brain stimulation for hunting season, or do all people get it when fall rolls around?

I know the women in my family have lots of fun socializing when making preserves at this time of year.  You should see the liquor bill. No cheap stuff for the girls.  ;D

The women around our home get into the gathering mode as well. The wife is busy getting her beans and peas picked, getting her jars all cleaned and lined up ready for the fall haul. Its the hunter gatherer in us I guess. I really feel for the people who have lost that, they are missing so much, what a mundane life they must have. Package to package to package,, gross.

You all saw the freezer full of chickens we raised this summer, now the freezer full of Salmon. Next will be the frozen veggies from the garden, fill the potato bin. Then hopefully fill it with some pure organic wild meat.

One cool thing that turned out great for us is three 5 gallon pails of squash plants that we planted along side my driveway against the fence.  So far I have picked 15 squash for a total of 48 lbs.  There are still a few more to come.  Spaghetti and butternut squash.  That is a lot of food from 3 simple pails of soil.

We are in big trouble . Everything grew well but the Tomatoes.
We usually have over 200 , my wife makes relish and salsa .
But this year , the plants started well but didn't grow .
So I have maybe 40 green tomatoes ...Anybody got an idea
where one might find some green tomatoes to buy bulk

We have tons of tomatoes, no ripened ones yet but hopefully they come before the frost. We will pick them soon and get them ripening in the garage. I'm sure you could find lots of tomatoes at your local farmers market this time of year w101.

Hope to get out fishing a few times this fall but I always say that and the hunting bug is starting to kick in.  Got a couple cameras out last weekend.  Shooting the bow more and more frequently but won't get out for elk until after our sheep hunt which starts next Sunday.

New backpack arrived in the mail from Stone Glacier and I was already excited to try it out, and then a ram down pic graced my phone this morning and that just adds to it  :).

Hey Ol Jr.

How does that Stone Glacier back pack of yours fit you?

That Stone Glacier stuff is right up there with current back pack theory.

The Scandinavian backpack people brought out the external strap around system like Stone Glacier has a couple of years ago.

It will be interesting how long this new system becomes part of the regular Euro- North America Backpack style.

I'm like you I always say I want to do some fall walleye hunting but man when those leaves start to change colour I don't know what it is lol, just have to have gun in hand.

It's 'bout that time hey! I as well have a few cameras up but they are pretty deep in at a new area and can't get in there reasonably without my ohv... so continue to click they will until the ban is lifted. I'm working opening weekend but have the Monday/Tuesday off to get out and see about trying my luck. If the ban is lifted by then it'll be quad and tent in the new area, otherwise it'll be the campervan at some previously hunted area. No real losing with either and really looking forward to spending some quiet time with nature.

I do have a big concern about my annual moose trip in BC this year. The largest fire SW of Williams Lake is getting REAL close to some good friends ranches and I'm not going to be surprised if they cancel the season out there. I'll trade a season for them stopping the fire and hence possibly saving our log cabin. My granddad hung that front door and it still closes with a breath.

So far the pack fits really nice.  I think it's going to be a big step up from the Eberlestock, it cinches down real tight to the back and the load doesn't seem to want to sag and pull back.  Load lifters that actually have a function will be nice.  This is going to be it's maiden voyage so we will see what happens past the honeymoon stage.

As to the second half of your post, gotta be honest...you've lost me.

I hear ya, but with that said did manage to get out Sunday and got a personal best eye (length wise anyways) so some small part of me is tugging to get out again.  The fishing bug does seem to be holding on a bit stronger this year.

Wouldn't mind getting out for the backswimmer migration on a couple trout potholes even just for an evening or two.  Can be a blast on the fly rod.  Floatin boatman, twitch twitch twitch...pause...bang!

Sorry just realized I'm posting way to much about fishin in a huntin thread :)

Getting more sheep pics through the telegraph and darn I hope there's some left by next week...

Looks like a solid shoot.  I'm stuck at work to in Dawson seeing all of the hunting pictures is killing me.  Had one nice whitetail on my trailcam up here but he has become a ghost.  Moved two other cameras around to maybe find him.  Went for a cruise last night looking for grouse and I now know what everyone refers to as the Saddle Hills Elk gongshow.  People everywhere and quad tracks everywhere on the big parts of crown land.  I did find a little honey hole on a couple small (3-quarters) areas of crown land running along a creek that has moose written all over it.  Hopefully be able to get a bull to come to a call before archery season closes for them in this area.

Playing around in the shop and getting things ready for the hunting trip. We will be heading out on Oct 5th this year. It's a little late but it will be ok be some small meat bulls out running around lookin for a mate. Getting all my stuff organized and ready. Sold that big tent and found a nice little 10x12 for a kitchen like I wanted. Built a nice fold up counter top for it and built this sink with running water. I will just pound in some small rails and nail it to the top of the rails once in the tent. Just fill the pail with warm water and wash away. Used a bilge pump I had kicking around and all just stuff I had in the shop only thing I bought was a switch and the Rubbermaid tub. Will just run the drain pipe out the bottom of the tent and out in the bush. Be nice for washing up to.
