Whitetail Days.
« on: November 21, 2019, 08:55:19 AM »
Been out a few days now, have saw a few bucks but again nothing that interested me. One decent buck maybe in the 140’s that I passed on the rest were all smaller bucks in the 120 down to basket bucks. Sure has gone quiet for movement the last couple days. I thinks it’s the lull before the big rut coming up, always happens. With the warm weather early in the week melting the snow it’s now crystallized it and it’s unbelievably noisy walking, impossible to walk up on anything. With this in mind I think I’m going to spend the rest of the week in my stand, see what that produces. Again, won’t close my tag on anything smaller than a 160/170 deer.  Couple pics of the days and a small basket buck I rattled up yesterday.

I think your in my spot :). Better to be watching the little bucks than doing paperwork like me :(  Hope it happens for you Walleyes. My first trip will be Saturday. Taking my 83 yr old uncle for a road hunt(oh the horror lol)/watch pipelines on Saturday to our go to Northern wmu. Been 2 yrs since we hunted there as we were chasing moose. Probably take a walk through the moose properties on Sunday morning as a few decent bucks have been seen on cams.

Nice WT country!
Yes, I believe the best rut activity is yet to come.
I will be out some this weekend as well.  Until then, crappy work.....
I think I see a rip in the social fabric, Brother can you spare some ammo?

Yah it is nice country. This area I walk into is very isolated hasn’t been a quad through there in 5 years. It’s about a 3 mile walk in from the closest quads. The general area is quite busy with hunters but this particular area I walk into is very isolated. If I ever kill anything in there it’s going to be a work out with the power saw to clear line to get into it but that’s the way I’m keeping it, I don’t want to clear it unless I have to and at that I will only clear what it takes to get it out. I found this area 5 years ago and in that time I am the only hunter in there. In total it’s about a 4 mile square area that feeds off the north another 7 miles to to closest trail so it’s a big area with no pressure. It shows it, lots of activity in there some of the best I’ve ever seen. I like this zone as it’s quad only till noon. I get up early, drive 50 min, unload my quad, quad in another 35 min, I’m off the quad 1 hour before sunrise, wait 15-20 min then start my walk into my first rattle spot, then work my way around. It’s about a 5 mile loop  that I walk and it takes me until just after noon to make it. I’ll have lunch then hit the quad trails. Its not too bad during the week you may cross paths with 1 or 2 other guys on machines, but I’ve also found some other trails that are fairly quite. But I do definitely stay away on the weekends.

Came close today. I was in my area again and I had allied in about 2 miles and was standing on a line I had heard a deer snort in the bush not far off, it didn’t run or it wasn’t too scared so I was just waiting for it, I grunted at it a couple times quietly just seeing if I could get it to stick it’s head out but I was also watching the lines after about 15 mins a deer came out down the line about 350 yards up wind from me. I could tell right away it was a buck you could see horn with the naked eye. I put the Binos on him and yup it was a good one. Couldn’t count points at the distance but man he had the frame and dark horns, so tall I’m sure I would have shot him. If he was a 5X I’m sure he was in the 160’s or better, he was coming down the line towards me and he stopped a couple times I thought he was going to come right down the line, there was a big dead fall across the line and he went in the bush around it when he did I just worked my way down the line about 50 yards to a nice spruce tree and stood kind of behind the limbs. I thought for sure he would come out. After about 15 mins nothing so I just gave him a little tickle with the rattle not too much but nothing, then after another 15 min a couple grunts but no way, I was there a little over an hour and no way he was just gone. Must have been on the trail of a hot doe I didn’t see. Probly the nicest one I’ve seen in a few years anyways.

Well that’s a wrap for me, did my land the last 3 days sitting in my stand in the evenings. Again, lots of deer, a few smaller bucks but nothing that interested me. So now I dream of what could have been with the one decent siting I had and make plans for next year.
