Wolf bait
« on: January 24, 2016, 07:01:55 PM »
So I decided to set up a wolf bait this year.  I have been working away a bit and have just had enough time to run in and check it on Sundays.  The bait had been sitting for a couple weeks without much action and then last weekend I had a short window of time so I ran in quick with the quad and sure enough a wolf ran across the trail in front of me on the way in and judging by the tracks there was a pack at the bait and I scattered them once they heard the quad.  My camera had been knocked down by something so can't really say what went on for sure.  I dropped another bait off, re set the camera and then checked it today again and it looks like one wolf came back during the night and that's it.

Should I be moving the bait when I get a chance or just wait it out?

I wouldn't move it. We are getting into the dead of winter, the snow is getting deep food is going to be getting scarce those animals will get braver and a bit stupid if you will for feed. Keep at it it will pay off.

Just my opinion.

Good luck Shrubs, I'm no expert on the wolf bait thing. I have been lucky enough to get a few over the years by being in the right place at the right time. But love to see guys like you going after them. Please keep us posted, like to hear about you success.

Well went to check the bait today and hopefully sit on it.  Plan was to sit on it until dark and then check the camera and see what had been around.  Just didn't want to leave any scent before I hunted.  On the way in I could see a bunch of coyote tracks that looked like they were heading towards the bait and decided it would be best to check the camera.  My feeling was if coyotes had been frequenting the bait wolves hadn't been there in a while.  Sure enough all that had visited were birds and coyotes and the bait had been ate right down.  I have pictures of a cougar visiting the bait quite a few times from a few weeks ago and looks like he/she might have been back one night but the picture leaves some guessing.  I think my biggest problem is i haven't set out enough bait to hold the wolves. I have more that needs to freeze up but with this warm weather it is proving difficult.  I hope to keep at it but need more time and some cold weather.
