Awesome fishing trip with family and friends
« on: January 08, 2013, 12:06:28 PM »
We just got back from what is usually at least an annual trek to one of our favorite areas to fish for whitefish. Typically it's been my Dad, his friend, and I. This year we brought along my 11 year old Son. We set up camp near the lake and and spent four nights.

The fishing was really hit and miss. When the whitefish were biting, they were hot.

While I was fiddling with a new (P.O.S.) heater, my son hooked into a 15-20 lb pike on 6 lb mono line and the fight was on. He played that fish for about 10 minutes until the pike bit the line off. We were in pretty shallow water so we got a good look at the fish and at one time he had him up to the hole, but it wasn't meant to be! That was pretty exciting!!

Overall, great  trip! Weather was good, comfortable camp, good company, gained 5 lbs in camp (again) and had a great time. The whitefish were a nice size. We've caught bigger, but on a 4 lb average I'm not complaining.

Here's a couple of pics.

Camp was very comfy. 12x14 tent, warm sleeping bags, cots, good stove, good wood, great food. Life is good!!!!

Had an awesome fish fry tonight, fish chowder for supper tomorrow, and the smoker will be working as soon as I get up in the am.

I just cracked open my first jar of smoked/pressure canned whitefish. Is it ever good!

My son brought a jar to school to share with his class and teachers. Sounds like it was well received. Most of the kids had never tried anything like that.
