Bucket List Idaho Perch Adventure
« on: February 28, 2016, 07:39:10 PM »

Bucket List Ice Fishing Adventure to one of the current Jumbo Perch producing lakes. I couldn't wait any longer and gathered up the wife and kids, a bunch of Jaw Jackers, Jaw Jacker rods and drove the 10 hours to the lake. This was some of the toughest fishing I've ever done. I was hiking onto the lake and covering about 6 miles a day pulling all my gear to get on and off the ice. Luckily it all came together and I scored my biggest perch ever a 15.75" 2.24 Pound giant. What an amazing day and beautiful place to go fishing.

I was lucky to score on the first day because day number two I could barely see the road driving to the lake because it was snowing and blowing harder than I have ever experienced before!  Luckily I got to the shore and waited a few minutes and as the sun came up in died down.  So got out there and fishing was a lot slower... covered many more miles and only picked up a fish or two every spot I tried and biggest were only around 13.5 inch.

The last day I didn't even go out because it snowed all day and night and there was ten cm of heavy wet snow on the ice... I just couldn't fathem dragging my sled miles in heavy wet snow so I went skiing with the family instead... fresh turns!

Hope you guys enjoy the video its a good one.

Great perch.  :)
It has been 35 years since I've seen a perch like that.
I think I see a rip in the social fabric, Brother can you spare some ammo?

Hey well that's ok at least you're working!  Yeah I'm sure one day it'll work out.  I'll be out in June again.  And maybe in the fall.

Yes I am aware of Flathead lake but it doesn't freeze as often and the perch are not giants.  My brother is looking into moving to Kalispell so if that happens I'll be hitting up flathead lake a bunch! Since it's a hop skip and a jump away from there.  Big lake trout as well!

Fished the Flathead quite a bit a few years back. Fished it every summer for about 10 years haven't been for about 10 years now. My sister and brother inlaw own a cabin a block up from the lake not far out of Polson we used to spend a lot of time down there.

There are a lot of perch in the lake but I certainly never seen any jumbos so to speak. In fact they are a bit different than our perch in appearance. They seem to be longer slender fish compared ours. Darn good eating out of that lake though. The laker fishing is OK with some decent fish coming out of it but in all honestly Cold Lake is a better laker lake than the Flathead. A #20 fish out of the Falthead is a big fish, a #20 pounder out of Cold Lake doesn't even raise an eye brow.

What I did enjoy while down there is we used to head south of Polson to a little area known as Saint Ignatius and head west of there up into the Bob Marshall and hit a small stream with the fly rods for Cutties.. Fabulous Cutty fishing the best I have ever experienced, now those are some good eating little fish butterflied open and seasoned in flour and fried in butter mmmm good.

Yup,, not to mention all the bikinis sunning themselves on the water down at the damn as well.. But that was another time,, seems like a lifetime ago lol..

Love Whitefish awesome little town. Another good little lake we hit a couple times was Little Bitterroot west of Kalispel,, great little pub there near the lake and awesome fishing in the lake.

PS the lake holds some decent sized Kokanee and Kamloops Rainbow,, some hogs in there.
