Electric Augers
« on: February 21, 2018, 09:58:47 PM »
With all this deep ice I'm curious as to how guys are finding their electric augers in these conditions.  I've spent the last little bit investigating what I can in the search for a new auger but to be honest even with guys like Gord Pyzer singing the praises of the electric revolution I wasn't convinced and stuck with the ol gas burner.  To be honest they look slow and with all this ice I feel this is a good time to see how they really handle the heavy load fighting 3' of ice with 3' worth of cuttings to bring up.
I'd really like to believe and would love to add an electric auger in the future especially if it could get the wife to cut a hole or two.  (The thought of that makes me feel funny hehe).  But it's gotta make sense.

Depends on your style of fishing. If you fish out of your vehicle a lot and are able to keep your equipment warm and a couple batteries on hand they are ok, and if you fish in the south a lot where the ice tends to be thinner I would say you can get by with an electric. A friend of of mine that I fish with a lot, bought one this year with his son. They paid around $800 for the unit and are very disappointed. Most of their fishing is done off quads and snow machine, long days out on the ice in the cold. This winter being a colder winter really brought out the problems with the batteries. Twice they were unable to finnish their days do to the batteries running out and by that I mean they were done just after lunch. These guys are hard core guys that will run and gun to find fish, 50 holes in a day in 3' of ice is not uncommon for them. So like I say, depends on your style, for me and my style they are out of the question. Not worth the price cause you still need a gas one at home for the long run days.

I will add last year the wife and boys bought me a new 8" Jiffy 4G light ( 4 stroke ) auger. I absolutely love this auger. I had/have an older 8" jiffy that I finally wore out after 16 years and a 10" 3hp jiffy that I use only for big Pike lakes. But this new auger is an awesome machine, starts like no other runs smooth as can be, no smoke do to clear gas, cuts as good as any I've seen. The only issue I had is the throttle cable as it came from the factory was not opening up the throttle all the way, it would bottom out on the handle before opening the carb fully so it was a little under powered in deep cuts. With a little adjustments and a farm fix it now opens the carb to full bore and has made all the difference in the power. Other than being like all new augers it is a little plasticky but it is a great little auger, well worth the dollars.

I do like the idea of them W101 but a couple things walleyes mentioned would make one not quite fit the way I fish.  Im not always punching crazy amounts of holes but there are days the auger gets a lot of work.  Looking for perch would be a good example.  Have a new gas one on the way now, but if a guy could find the right deal on a new electric I'd really like to get one.

For myself if I was interested in an electric I would look at getting set up with an adapter and a good drill. Even if you had to buy the drill at say $200 the adaptors are $90 and a hand auger if you didn't have one at $60 you are money ahead, and you have a darn good cordless drill when auger not in use.

Love my gas Jiffy but I made my own electric too.  Needs the truck battery and is a bit on the heavy side, but man does it cut.
It will cut as many 3 foot holes as you like and fast too..... ;)

That's definately another idea I wouldn't be opposed to Axe.  What does a drill like that draw for amperage?

I've looked into some of the augers that are designed to run off a drill and I feel the best options are either the nils or the k drill with the k drill most likely getting the nod.  Pretty big Vexilar fan and I know they don't back junk.

OL_JR,

That electric auger of mine is a bit of a beast and is a conversion from an earth auger.  It has a pretty good gear reduction and I would say it pulls about 80-100 amps under load.  I keep the truck running when I am drilling.

I have seen similar homemade jobs from old gear reduction Dodge starter motors.  Honestly though, with the truck on the ice and about 40 feet of cable; you can drill a decent array of holes quickly.
