Fickle Lake
« on: July 26, 2017, 02:55:06 PM »
Camped at Fickle for a few days and had a great time.

And the fishing was great considering this was a collapsed lake just a few years ago.Fishing here was very good back in the 80's with nice chunky walleye and huge pike.Ask Speckle about big pike here.  ;)

About 5-6 years ago we camped here and only caught 7 little hammer handle pike in two days, not very good at all.

This trip was different.First morning out we landed 35 fish in less than three hours with most walleye being in the 45-55cm range, some were smaller. As for pike well we caught a few small ones but nothing to brag about.

I'm just happy to see a lake come back to life after being on the brink if you know what I mean.

Also one evening we heard a wolf howl across the lake.I believe the only good wolf is a dead wolf but it's still nice to hear them howl. ;)

Right on Sonny, awesome video and some nice eyes there as well.

Looks like a darn good time, glad you were able to get out.

I have been fishing there since i was in a diaper so to speak lol. Almost 50 now. Have seen this lake go from a keep lake with nice eyes, pike and whitefish to collapsed and being stocked with walleye to save it. At one time if you caught a walleye you were asked to report it to the F&W office in Edson as they were not sure the transplant took.

Have had a ton of great fishing days on this lake, when the bite is on it can be amazing but true to it's name frustrating when it is not. Back in my youth, dad had a spot in the far bay for eyes, in September he would whistle to the hills and we would have bull elk answer back. So cool.

As Sonny mentioned, the size class is growing now and every year we are catching nicer and nicer eyes there. Plus the potential for a big pike. Closing the lake to keep has sure helped it over the years. Haven't been there yet this year but soon.

Sounds like a happy ending story, hope it holds up. Be great if you could have started fishing the lake when you where in diapers, and still be fishing it when you are in diapers again. Kind of full circle. ;D (just funny with you Sooner)

What Sooner said is bang on.

Also years ago camping here was free and they supplied free firewood, not many places do that nowadays.

As for the fishing we had best luck flipping a jig off the point on the west side of the lake.

Hey Sooner do you know what happened to all the lily pads off the point? There's a few there but last year there was hardly any.It used to be solid lily pads off the point and straight across too.

Crank up the volume..

Thanks for posting the Video (the wolf howl was great)

As I guess I would consider my self a pike fisherman for the most part and  I guess my point of view might be different than yours. Since the stocking and management of the lake for walleye what I have seen is the pike are now in a collapsed state and good luck catching a speckle sized pike in there now. A total shame in my book. You can catch any number of walleye you want but perch and pike fishing in this province has diminished quite dramatically. Case in point Fishn' Canada comes to what used to be a good pike lake to do a show on pike fishing in Alberta and end up having to do a large Walleye show because they can't catch any pike just lots of large walleye on pike sized lures.

Love the lake though and again your video was great.

Yeah I know what you are saying and it's the same with a lot of other lakes too.

Wab and pigeon come to mind, lots of walleye but no big pike. :(

I have no clue as too the disappearing lily pads. As a kid this lake was full of them. Now not so much. Dad used to have me at the nose of the boat while he pushed along with a paddle in them pads. When I seen a pike i was to cast out to it. Fun fun and caught a lot of pike this way as a kid.
