First Stream Bull Of The Season
« on: July 09, 2011, 09:34:49 PM »
Had a nice morning on a foothills stream with a buddy. A few bugs are starting to hatch, and we caught a few fish despite the water level still being on the high side. Landed the first river Bull of the year on a fly tied by my son he calls "The Mountain Stone." Absolutely nothing better than catching on his creations.

Great fish Dace, and (as usual) great pictures as well. That bull looks real healthy.

Tuc, the answer was revealed in Dace's fly selection. They are Stone Flies (larvae). I'm guessing that within a month you will see plenty of exoskeletons on the rocks as they make their way to the adult stage.

Nice fish!  My old man loved catching fish on flies I used to tie as a kid too.

upper highwood in k country jen. and yes the bugs are stones. the fish was a challenge and a lot of fun to land on the 3wt. had a 6wt rigged with a big streamer on the bank for bulls and didn't expect this guy to suck up the stone. first fish of the day and i could have packed out after that, but i didn't. thanks for the comments guys.

Wicked looking fish Dace!!

If we had fishing like that a little closer to home for me I'd seriously consider getting in to the fly fishing.  As it stands right now my fishing habit is a big enough money pit...I can only imagine what it would be like if I got into flies as well!
Just puttin' it out there...
