Fishing FL keys/Okeechobee and the Withlacoochie river
« on: February 25, 2019, 05:53:38 PM »
So wife convinced me to take my first holiday in 35 or so yrs.  We drove to the FL keys and back, strictly rural area's, saw lot's of Great museums, neat country, met great people all the way, met a decades long penpal and did a Ton of fishing in FL.
Keys
Mangrove Snapper.  VERY good eating, the most common dock catch

Biggest dock catch, a 4' min. hammerhead on 20lb test line  funfunfun

Striped grunt.  While edible they harbor the same bacteria as grouper and barracuda so we never kept any.  Also caught puffers, one lane snapper, one sheepshead, a few catfish and a little stingray.

Lake Okeechobee.
Spent the bucks on a guide;  not cheap but well worth the money(US 275 plus 80 bait plus 50 tip).  Caught catfish, mudfish, bowfin and at least 40 largemouth, this being the best, little under 5lbs.

Withlacoochie River
This is bayou country, looks like those gator htg shows.  Great panfishing, only caught one bass.  Word of caution, were told most water mocasson bites were when reaching down for a fish as they're attracted to the fish fighting.  Were we to go there again I'd take an ultralight rod with 4 or 6lb line.  No seeum's were bad too, and mosquito's don't usually bother me, but the fishing was great.  Lot's of turtles, you hear gator's but don't see many.  Well, the odd one.

Bluegill, a smaller one, first catch, sorry, bad pick

A Flier, note spikey fins top and bottom

They're small but fun to catch and Lot's of them.

Gives you a taste anyway, Would go again in a heartbeat.  Loved the south, every single state.
Figure everything S is half price of here.  Gas 60 to 70 cents/litre, gallon of Wild Turkey burbon 33.45 US, 18 miller high life 10.45, supper 2 entre's and 2 drinks 23 US, nice clean rooms 40 to 60 US.

What a great adventure Bruce, I bet you wish you listened to your wife a few years ago. Take another one soon, life’s short.

Nice, that looks like a really good time.
Only thing I would do different is try to fit in a gator hunt if possible.
If you were a r.c.m.p member involved with high river you are a disgrace to the uniform and a traitor to the citizens of this country.

Bruce.

Is that python problem as bad as they say on the news? Can people hunt them?

Do they make cowboy boots and hand bags out of the snake hides?  Like they do with alligator hides.

I was just wondering.

Thanks.

Greylynx the pythons at okeechobe Are a problem.  City people let them go when they're too big.  Not sure of the effect, guide didn't really say other than voicing his disdain.  Believe they're treated as a nuisance to be disposed of.  Never saw a nutria, unbelievable number of roadkill possums on the road.
Couple more pics:
During the day all we caught was puffers.  Pain as they have almost beaver teeth and guarantee you'll have to cut the line and lose your hook (#2 circle hook)

Stingray, at first thought it a harmless skate, then luckily noticed the stinger.

Gar.  had a school of pinfish (?) around the dock, on sunny warm afternoons a couple gar would corral them and feed.  Fun to watch.  Also had a school of juvenile parrotfish feeding on the dock posts(still just blue/green, no pink showing up yet, maybe 18" long at largest), and a damselfish living by the strairs.

This was the view from our deck. Rented a half duplex so shared dock with neighbors.  Was apprehensive but was no problem.  Found it on homeaway.com  Was told vrbo is same thing.  Highly recommended.  Basically private owners for rent site.

Had a commercial boat about 6 docks down, went by mornings/late aft.  After they came back could go down and buy off the boat for pennies compared to retail
Rock crab claws, they take off the big claw and throw them back as it will grow back

Lobster, they call the red one a Christmas lobster

Thought about gator htg but never priced it.  Farmed alligator heads are for sale everywhere.  Wife bought a nice on for something like 25 bucks

Thanks for the extra pictures Bruce.  I really enjoyed them. I think the boys on the site will also appreciate them.

About that puffer fish you caught.  Is that the same fish the Japanese make the potentially fatal Fugu out of?

Would you be in serious medical danger if you would have touched the spines on that fish?

Wow. Just wondering.

I loved the pinfish picture.

Thanks again for taking time out and posting those extra pictures.

Hey Bruce gotta love food that comes 30 feet and ends up in the pot. Are those puffer's found off of Vancouver Island also? Years ago I fished with my BIL that worked as a guide for Painters Lodge in Campbell River. I caught some kind of fish I never seen before and he told me just cut the line so I didn't get stung. He also said the Japanese love them and know how to handle them. Can't remember what it looked like after all these years but same story it seems.
