Got out on the big lake today, got a bit of a late start for what I prefer this time of year, I like to be on the water by 6 or 7 didn't get a hook in the water until 9. Still managed a decent day. They weren't hot and heavy but we caught steady throughout the morning. Until the sun got high about 11 the shallow rod with 6" Coyote spoon at 50' did the best. After the sun got high the deep rod with bait took over, set at 75 - 90' Anchovies in Chartreuse teaser head did the trick. In all we boated over a dozen nice fish. Went in about 1:30 had lunch at the marina and called it a day. In all a real nice day on the water with some friends that are quite new to fishing and a first for lake trout and downrigger fishing.

Right on nice looking fish, I'm an envious man as well.  Hopefully the weather holds out for you and you can make er out again I never get sick of Laker pics.  Once again dam that is a nice setup you got.  Your downriggers are probably worth about as much as my boat  :).

Just sitting here at work counting down the hours now until our annual run out to the coast for the Salmon trip. We didn't make it out last year so seems I am extra stoked this year. It's a little extra special this year as the oldest son and daughter in law  and grandkids are coming. It's been quite a few years since my son has made it out as I don't believe he's been out since his adult life has started so I'm thinking 12 year since he's been out. It will be the first time ever on the ocean for the daughter in law and she is an avid fisher girl so really looking forward to getting her out in the boat a couple times. She loves the outdoors but is a little apprehensive of being on the ocean but once she gets out there she will be fine I know. As well it will be quite the experience for the grandkids just to see the ocean and all it has to show, Grandma is ecstatic to spend time with them out there. I hope to get them out on the water at least once or twice for a quick fish. This is a pink year so we will get them out and into some pinks and let them catch a few salmon.
I leave work tomorrow morning, will finish packing up a few things tomorrow night and we leave Wen morning and check into the cabin on the 10th and will be there until the 20 or 21st. I hope to get 8 or 9 days on the water with a couple days off just doing the tourist thing, not my idea but grandma has to put her foot down or I'd be on the water 10.5 days for 14hrs a day so someone has to have some restraint.
Anyways I will keep up on our progress as we fish along and hopefully have a few pics here and there to show.

I just got my boat back from two weeks in the shop.  Haven't been out yet this year and looking for accommodations.  If we can't find anything Mayne we will end up in Sooke.  That's where you head?  If so see you out there and maybe you can point us in the right direction.  Be out week of the 14th!

Yes we will be in Sooke again. It's been some what slow so far but am hoping with the big tide coming in around the 16-17th it will pick up. If not we will grind it out and pull out what we can. Sooke is never like the outside anyways and makes you work for your catch, maybe that's why I like it so much, it makes you think, the fish (Chinook) don't come easy but if you pay attention to detail and work the structure it will produce fish. If you end up there Doc drop me a notice through here and I certainly will do what I can to help out if you need it. Good luck.

Thanks I'm still crossing my fingers that something will come available up in port hardy or ucluelet.  Like you said they can really give up fish sometime.  Makes for fun fishing when they're hammering so fast you can't keep the gear down.  Now i hope I can find accommodations.   You travel all the way from AB you should definetally try out ucluelet if you haven't.  Beautiful little town and great fishing.  Great offshore fishing only 4 miles out too.

Yah you bet,, been to Ukee, Tofino, Nootka, Port McNeil, Camble River, fished quite a few places out there. I really like Ukee one of my favourites and will definetly hit it again. The wife didn't care much for Ukee not much to do there while I was out fishing, maybe next year we will hit it if we all go together again. What we like about Sooke is there's lots for the women to do when the guys are out fishing, Victoria is only a half hour away and as you know the whole area is loaded with stuff for the kids and the family. It's a bit of a trade off, the fishing isn't the best in Sooke but one can make more of a family vacation out of it. With that said on a good year Sooke can be as good as the best of them. Two years ago I not only had the best year I have ever had at Sooke I had one of the best years I have ever had on the chuck. Limits of Chinook were quite easily obtained we came home with a very nice average size as well, no huge fish but none under 15# either.

I spent almost a full day processing salmon last Sunday.  My brother got back from a trip out to the Skeena.

I think I see a rip in the social fabric, Brother can you spare some ammo?

Just got back from the big lake as well. Had a good time weather was great on the lake caught 74 in  a day and a half but none were keeper size. Only downer part was the large blue green algae die off which was going on. I have never seen that on that lake in my life time.

When you go to the coast do you take your own boat, rent or charter?

Yes the size has really taken a hit the last 3 years. Oh well good old Alberta fish management what can yah say.

Yes I take my own boat and gear out a full self ran operation. Been going out there since I was a kid with my parents and on my own for getting on 15 years now.

Not a bad first day, looks like some fish are starting to show up. We were able to land 2 nice Chinook and 2 big hog Pinks today and after a long fight we dropped one at the boat. Very lumpy out there today it was hard to keep a good footing in the boat at times and just as I went to net one I slipped a bit and I had the fish in the net but I couldn't close it and it jumped the net. But I'll take it for a first day.

Good Job!  So I got accommodations at Port Hardy Monday to Thursday so we're heading up there instead.  I guess I'll be fishing the exact opposite end as you.  Hopefully weather cooperates and the fish come in too.  Should be fun!
