Fishing Log 2020
« on: May 23, 2020, 04:08:33 PM »
May as well start my annual fishing log for this year.

Got out today for a nice solo fish on one of our recently opened lakes. ‘Twas a cold one that’s for darn sure. Air temp was 4 deg when I launched with a stiff north wind blowing across the lake and an off and on again drizzle. Water temp was 47 deg so yah it was chilli but felt good to get out finally. Pike were hungry that’s for darn sure and managed quite a few walleye with my 1 keeper at 52cm. Landed well over a dozen eyes but most were under which is to be expected this time of year. But it was good just to get out and get the cob webs out of everything and enjoy some open water. Minnow tipped jig was the hot lure as the day progressed they did start to take the trolling rap pretty steady. Shallow water any where’s in the 9’ to 13’ was the feeding zone.

Out again tomorrow with with the son and grandson.

Got into a few fish today, not a lot of walleye but what we did get were darn nice fish. Only 1 that was in the slot the rest were too big. They were few and far in between, all hit on trolling raps none would take a jig or a bobber or bottom bouncer.

The fish my grandson is holding up is in the top 6 walleye I’ve ever seen landed by line I would say in the 8 - 9# range what a beast. Didn’t bother putting her on the scale as it was a quick off the hook and pic and back she went. Nice to see those ones released they are few and far between this day and age. She was a beauty to see.

Thanks Walleyes.

Was that beautiful specimen still gravid with piles of yellow eggs coming out of her?

From the pictures she still appears ready to spawn. Which is now or very soon in your neck of the woods.

Thanks Gentlemen.

Actually Grey the walleye are done spawning. We have been cleaning a few the last few days and they are all spawned out. She was quite beat up from the spawn her belly was quite raw and her tail was quite beat up from the gravel beds. She would have been a nice one to catch around mid Aug I’m sure she would have another pound on her during mid summer.

Thanks Walleyes.

It is almost June. Oh Dear. Sorry for the question.

She would have been a 10-11 pounder at her peak.

Pretty healthy looking, and post spawn hungry to repair her aching body.

Got out again today, walleye were hungry unfortunately all too small today. Couldn’t seem to get one into the slot size for the lake we were on. Must have boated over 75 walleye in 6 hrs just crazy but none for the live well. Oh well was still a great day to be out.

Remember, There are good days of fishing and then there are Great days of fishing.

I have had those days on Fickle Lake. Can't catch a walleye to save your life in the morning. Last 2 hours of the same day and it's double headers for 2 hours straight. Same location, same jigs, same minnows. Crazy how they can turn on and shut down.
