Going On An Adventure.
« on: February 13, 2017, 08:51:52 PM »
We are heading across the border on a bit of an adventure tomorrow. Taking the quads into a small lake I picked out on Google maps. Looks like it might hold fish can't find no info on it. It's been off the grid for ever but a couple years back they built a logging road about 2 miles off of it so we will see. I'm on the hunt for a backwoods walleye/perch lake so I've been studying the maps heavy for the right one. If this one doesn't work out we have about 4 or 5 trail lakes we want to try over the next while.

Will have a report tomorrow night,, hopefully some pics.

Had a good day today gentleman, not much for fish but still a good day. First lake we hit was a total bust, looked good on Google maps but turned out to be a swamp lake, I was surprised as it's quite a fair sized little lake maybe 3 miles long by 2 miles wide. But no water in it, maybe 2 feet of stanky water under the ice. So ran back to the truck and loaded the machines then down the logging road another 10 or 12 miles and north a couple miles and unloaded again and into a set of 4 lakes. After a 4 mile quad ride we were on our second lake of the day, it looked better. We did find the water on this lake better and clean. After a few holes we found it to be not too deep maybe 12' at the deepest. We did some running and gunning and hit about 4 spots with one small pike to show for it. So we ran down the creek bed to the 3rd lake of the day. Again decent water but couldn't find anything over 10'. After 2 sets 4 of holes only 1 hammer handle pike. So back to lake the 2nd lake and a high bank that looked like it would be the deepest part of the lake. Here I hammered off a series of 8 holes and got into about 14' of water. Fished there till 5 and nothing but 4 hammer handle pike, no perch, no eyes.

So no biggy, it was a miss today. We still have quite a few more to check out until ice out we are laying the next plans already. Tomorrow we are headed into Waterhen, it's a bigger more well known lake apparently they have been hitting some decent pike in the 20# range and some nice eyes. We will leave the exploring until next day off in March.

No fish but a blast checking out new country and trying to find your way around out there, always good to be out it's never a waste of time.

That would be a blast Walleyes sounds like a good day even though you didn't hit the eyes and perch on the first trip it will be that much better when you find that hidden honey hole.  Just getting out and exploring new country is always worth it.  There's always something even if it's a small detail that a guy can take from those trips that ends up paying off down the road.

Sounds like a fun day out. There are 3 smaller lakes in the northern wmu i hunt that i have walked to, argoed to and sledded over. All make me go hmmm and i have been wanting to do what you just did for a while. This summer we will haul the canoe in with the argo and try a few with a rod and depth finder. Worst case is a day out in the woods.
