Going To Brave The Cold / Back With Report.

It's darn cold out but I can't stay cooped up anymore. Was out on Monday on Waterhen and nailed quite a few Pike. Nothing big but quite a few. Tomorrow going to hit Green Lake (Sask ) cold or not can't take not being out on the water. Have the tent and heater so all will be good.
Will have a report tomorrow night.

If you go anywhere other than the north end on Green, be careful driving a truck. That lake has a lot of current. Id take a quad or snowmobile anywhere on the lake but would be cautious about a truck further south than where most people fish.

We didn't go out to Green today hit a different lake. Had not a bad day, didn't hit them hot and heavy but we managed a couple meals. Hit a few Pike lots small but kept a couple in the 3# range, 4 decent Perch and 2 Walleye that we kept. 1 50cm and 1 real nice one in the 5# range. It was cold though thank goodness for the tent and heater.
To answer your question sonny I run one of the old sunflower style heaters. Tent wise go to CT and look at the Woods tents, best bang for your buck. I run the Woods 4 man. It's bigger by 12" than any of competitors of the same size and $100 cheaper.
Thanks for the heads up on Green mike, appreciate it. I'll keep that in mind if I head that way ever.

Beauty fish. When me and the wife move back to that Lloyd area I will reacquaint myself with many of those lakes just inside the alberta border. Its busy up there but there is still a few hidden gems. Theres one perch lake that very few fish anymore just south of pierceland that Ive heard the odd rumour about big perch in again.

I've been in cold lake 5 years now and have been fishing Sask fairly steady for the last 3 years and have just begun to scratch the surface of the lakes available with in an hr or so of my place. Never mind the fishing part but then there's the learning the lake part that takes a long time to learn a lakes likes and dislikes. I'm sure I'll live here many years before I head into a lot of those lakes with confidence. I'm trying to slow down the experimenting some and concentrate on about a half dozen of the lakes. Mistohay, Waterhen, Grieg, Makwa, Peck, Little Fishing and a couple other small lakes I've been into and will try again. So many options it's crazy. Had a good discussion with a conservation officer yesterday on the lake and got some good inside info on some of the lakes in that area.

Peck and LIttle fishing were always lakes that were ok for fishing but never great. They have stocked them like crazy lately so the walleye fishing is getting better. Ministikwan is a lake that can produce bigger fish on average than any of the other lakes in the area with the exception of upper makwa. There is one little gem of a lake in there with virtually no access now and that's Branch Lake. They are starting to build cabins on it so you can sled onto it now. Theres some good eyes in there and when you can find them, there is some super tanker perch. Millions of small ones but some honest jumbos to. The other lake that we use to fish 15 years ago is Deer. Use to have a good average size of perch that were 11 to 13 inches. No one really fishes it anymore as its on the edge of the rez. Dad and I were in there 4 years ago now and did alright on 11 and 12 inch perch but had more 10's than anything.

According to the Conservation officer they have stopped stocking Ministikiwan for a while now. The Pike population has gotten out of hand and they feel it's no use stocking the Walleye until they get the predator issue under control. He said they did test netting last summer and the Walleye count was very low.

I see Deer lake was mentioned. Many years ago, we used to get some really big perch out of there. Honest 2 pounders, but never big schools them. Some of the biggest perch I ever saw. Perch lakes change though.

Pike are definetly doing well in ministikwan. Not uncommon to catch a 10 to 15 pounder every trip ice fishing and a handful of times in the summer. The walleye fishing is definetly not poor there. Winter I have never focused on them but in the summer you can still do well. I can see it starting to slow down as every person that fishes there seems to have the "keep our limit" everytime out.

Looks like lots of structure in there as well mike, looks very interesting. May have to give it an early season try.
Problem with Deer is it's surrounded by a reserve, apparently something of the locals can get pretty territorial lol. Not worth the hassle for me, lots of places to fish.

Ministikwan is better mid-summer. Majority of the eyes spawn in between the islands where its closed until July 1. Deer has the rez on one side, you actually get to the lake by driving on in the ditch of the road. I have always heard those rumours about the locals but in all of the years we have fished it, we have never had an ounce of problems. In fact, no one we know has ever had a first hand experience with getting chased off by the locals but I agree with you, sometimes its just not worth the hassle.

That's a really nice eye, sure looks healthy. Can't beat that haul for the dead of winter, not a lot of lakes left on the alberta side where you can take a nice mixed bag like that home.
