Obed is open water but the water level is really really low.
Don't think I can get my boat in except maybe my little 12 footer

Thanks for the report, how do you find that lake? I understand it has some pretty fair size browns.

Highway 16 west to Obed Summit.
Sonny:
The ice is out and the wind is putting oxygen into the lake
Those Browns have just got a big shot of air. And they are hungry.

Kind of surprised it is off that much this early, at Obed which is high. Nights have been cold.

Yes ice off is early this year by about 10-14 days.
For Grey and JR yes there are a few nice browns here but it's a hard lake to fish.We camp here sometimes and always see disappointed people at the boat launch.
They say we came all the way from yada yada yada and didn't catch a brown. I say well welcome to Obed. lol
Then you have some folks who say "We seen schools of browns in the shallows but they wouldn't bite".. I say "No you didn't,what you seen were schools of suckers in the shallows" lol Some folks call them whistling trout.
Like I said it's a hard lake to fish for browns but.... Even the sun does shine on a dogs arse once in awhile.

Went by Slave Lake today was surprised to see it still iced over. Lac La Biche is ice free. Went into town today and Cold lake is ice free as well, some ice built up on the shores but she’s wide open. Hopefully it’s decent next week I’m itching to get the big boat out for a trial run.

Found an old pic of Obed from May 3 2012...lake was still frozen over back then.
Proof that the climate changes from year to year.

This low water in Obed has me concerned.
Please correct me if I am wrong. I understand that Obed Lake is a spring fed lake, and a nice flow of water came in from the "Johnson" farm through a canal. How is that canal these days? I think the lowering of the water table in Alberta has even hit Obed summit. Please note this is only conjecture.
I have noticed since the 1970's that the water table in the foot hills is drastically declining. For example, the little creeks around the old Silver Summit Ski hill have almost all dried up. They used to have all kinds of Athabows in them.
A cheap write off would be the too bit climate change excuse or even fracing. The water levels were going down in the foothills evern before climate change and fraccing.
Any comments would be welcome. Thanks.

Greylynx,
In the early 80's, I spent a lot of time fishing Athabows around the Sundance/Emerson/Mosquito lakes area. There was more water in the little creeks in those days compared to now. One of my favorites was little Kadie/Katie sp? creek, but today it barely flows. Lynx and Nosehill creeks were ones I spent a lot of time on also. Stayed at old trapper Gord's quite a bit in those days.
It is my belief that there are longer term cycles (decades long) of wet and drought and tree growth history proves that data. The cheap climate change rhetoric that the liberal carbon tax nuts are spewing these days is really disproven by this data.
We know the dirty-30's were an extreme cycle of drought and then in the 60's through the mid 80's it was much wetter. We were back into a drier cycle since then though. I believe it is slowly turning around again now though.

Hauled the boat up to Jarvis lake to take it for a run but the gate to the boat launch was still locked.
Drove farther up to Gregg lake and it was still 3/4s iced over but there was enough open water to blow the cobwebs off the boat. And I seen something that I have never seen before. A frog sitting on the ice.
Also seen a moose on the way out.

Any predictions on when maligne lake will be open ?
Stopped in at Pierre Grey yesterday and the ice was still on the Brooky lake with a little open water at the boat launch.
I put in 5 hours at Obed yesterday ripping streamers on sinking fly line with no luck .
