New Tip Up Build.
« on: December 14, 2017, 04:43:54 PM »
So I've never been a fan of standard Tip Ups  I don't like the way they work, I don't like the fact your line spool sits under the water makes it hard to set your exact depth off bottom and I don't like the way they travel in machines they can be bad for tangles. I only use Tip Ups for Pike fishing so sensitivity is not a big issue for me. I've played with a few different ideas over the years and most recently came up with these. As some may remember I tried fly reels for ice reels this past week and did not like them. Being someone who does not like to waste the brain got to working again. With material I had at home and I stripped the flag poles off of a couple old Tip Ups I had in the tickle trunk I came up with these. I like em best idea I've had yet. I've built 3 look forward to putting them to use soon.

I concur , refresh our memory.  Where did the reels come
Will they hold 50 or more yards of 75 lb test ice line or braid .
Actually I sold a few ice items last year and gave a free tip up
with each purchase ... and who knows we may have ice someday .

I bought the reels this fall and was going to use them as ice reels but after a test run I didn't like them for fighting fish, to slow of a retrieval caused me to lose fish. The problem is the small arbour, it takes wayyyy to much line to fill up the spool before the arbour gets big enough to make much of a difference on the retrieval so this also kind of answers your question. Yes you could fit well over 200 yards of 100# braid on one. I now have them spooled with 100 yards 80# braid and the spools are not even close to half full.

Hey Walleyes:

With a few adjustments that ice fishing rig might work well on the trapline.  ;)

That setup has a lot of power to it. :)

Well shit that is ingenuity if I've ever seen it. Pretty simple set up in the end but a lot going on at the same time to get there.  I'm sure it will be pretty cool when that first flag goes up and that line is peeling away making that reel hum.  You've got a double indicator with the flag and the reel clicker.  Plus the the fish can handle the bait with without a whole tonne of resistance.
