New Winefred campground!!!
« on: August 21, 2016, 04:29:32 PM »
I was talking to my neighbour today, the local poobah for Parks. He informed that our gov't was putting a 90 unit campground in at Winefred Lake.  Check out Alberta Parks and you will find this in the "Northeast" section.  Chances they will be building a highgrade road to the site from the last wellsite to access the new park with "land yachts".  I fondly? recall the days 30 odd years ago when we would "mud" our way in their with trikes & tubs and camp at the end of the Grist Lake airstrip.  Walleyes was lucky, his BIL would fly the boys in on his floatplane.  Not only have Winefred & Grist been beaten like a "rented mules" by the already easy access and the subsistence fishermen from Janvier, but look out now.  What was once a fantastic fishery, will now be pounded out, unless strict limits will be enforced.  Thoughts???

Actually makes me extremely mad and sad at the same time. It's going to turn into another seibert lake.  Give it 10 years and it will be a barren lake that was once a fishermans trophy paradise.  Another lake to add to the list of lakes we can tell our kids about how they used to be.

90 sites....  :'(

The 90 campsites aren't going to be the demise of this lake. The sport fisherman can't keep anything in AB anyways guys. 1 fish per kept by the few hundred people that actualy know how to catch fish won't put a dent into it. It will be the high grade road and the subsistence fisherman that will be the demise of this lake. The keepers of the land will get er cleaned out no doubt about that one.

Couple that with our bone head regulations and all the big spawners will be slowly cleaned out and whalla,, another Alberta lake on the collapsed list in 5 years. Then a closer for 5 years and,,, you guessed it, a tag system for Winefred.

Oh no... I haven't even fished there yet.  Guess I'll have to put in on the must do this winter before the impending collapse!

Back a few years ago,, probly 20 or so a nephew and I mudded in for the weekend. Made it in with a 4 X at the time. Tented it at the forestry cabin. We fished 2 days I beleive caught and released many eyes over the weekend. On the last day we kept our legal catch at the time which was 3 a piece. Our stringer of 6 fish weighed 36# lol. Don't see that average for a days catch to often, not this day and age that's for sure. She was a gem that lake.

Wow, that sure is a nice stringer.  Reminds me of the first year they opened Calling Lake to One walleye any size... or was it two any size.  Anyways, 6-7 pound fish stringers.  Yup we slaughtered them and so did everyone else.  As with every good thing, short lived.
