Opening Day Tomorrow.
« on: May 04, 2016, 06:29:29 PM »
Headed east across the border tomorrow for opening day. Going to hit Makwa. Mostly going to see if we can get on some big pike in the shallows may try for some walleye as well. Boats all ready to go, it's going to be good to get out.

Right On Walleyes.  Turnover starts in them there shallows and spreads.  I am sure you will have your depth thermometer with you.

Best Wishes.  I would normally say Good Luck, but your too good a fisherman for that statement.

Is the ice off Cold Lake yet?  It has to be candling pretty severely at least.

Was a good day, felt darn good to get out on the open water man got to tell yah. We didn't take bait with us today it was more of a scouting trip. We just ran an assortment of Raps all day trolling and checking structure. Hit a few pike nothing big maybe 5# being the biggest.

Darn nice lake wild structure, bays, inlets, long shallow flats dropping off to deep rock holes a very interesting lake. I am really looking forward to getting back there in a month to get into the walleye fishery it looks very promising.

4 fish limit on walleye there as well I can see a couple good feeds coming home this summer,, yum, yum..

And yah ice is off Cold Lake been wide open for two days now.

Sounds like your standard makwa pike, perfect size for the smoker.  I know all those lakes from pierce land over to loon lake intimately. Need ain't help or info let me know. There's some big perch in those lakes to. Where did you launch out of?

That's Pine Cove, up at that end is good for perch in the winter, tons of smaller ones but you can pick through and get some solid 10 to 12 inchers.  Good walleye spot just SE of where you launch by the creek.  In the summer time we have fished steele narrows (other part of makwa to the west).  Theres a launch there to although Ive heard of peoples vehicles getting broke into.  We have never had an issue there.  This part is more fisherman as there are no cabins on it, so in the summer it has far less boat traffic.  The other parts of Loon Lake area, Makwa and jumbo are good for fishing to but in the summer they get stupid busy with wakeboarders and tubers.

Thx Mike awesome stuff. We went over to steele narrows and I really liked what I saw over there lots of interesting structure on that part. I think I am going to concentrate on that side as you said it looks like the loon lake side could get busy with boats running around. Some nice long steep rocky banks on that side I can't wait to work over with a jig and minnow rig.

I fished Makwa in the winter one day last year.  We caught a bunch of nice perch.  Had to work for them and got two big fat walleye.  The pike were like you said small.  I have a feeling there must be big pike in that lake.  Great forage base and all kinds of variable structure with inlet streams.  They may just have too much food as it seems there are tons of small perch when we talked to the locals.  In the winter the fish were quite deep.

Ya there are some definite cliffs on the Steele narrows side. We have caught a lot of eyes there suspended feeding on juvenile whitefish.

Brandon, for the most part the pike are 3-5 pounds with the odd 10 pound fish and maybe 1 or 2 in the high teens/low 20s every year.
