Replacing crankbait trebles with singles
« on: July 03, 2016, 09:40:48 PM »
Thinking of changing all my crankbaits over to single hooks, I find when the fish are really on they just hook themselves so darn bad it's a real pain to get a good release on them.  Anyone have any experience doing this?  Is there a noticeable difference in the amount of lost fish?

I laboured over this for quite a while . I assume you are fishing pike when those
tangles occur . In the south we don't fish pike on purpose , they are a byproduct
of Walleyes .  I put on singles , didn't like the way the baits run , missed some fish
On the rear hook . I think my partner gave me this one . On a standard bait ,with
2 trebles, middle and back . With the bait held horizontal , and the hooks hanging down
Naturally , snip off the point that is closest to the body when the bait is in normal
Motion . Make barbless of course .  On a small bait ,I just remove the rear hook .

I did this with some of my spoons for ice fishing, nothing worse than a walleye or pike taking a treble down nasty. I don't really fish in the summer much, so can't speak on crankbaits.

I remove the bottom hook on crank baits then cut the treble hook to one and barbless of course..

Some good suggestions gonna try a few different things and try and find a balance between good hookups on the slower days and easy releasing.  Never gave it much thought before but now with both kids and the wife fishing a guy can end up handling a lot of fish in a day.
