Staying safe on the early ice
« on: November 17, 2017, 01:58:37 PM »
How to be safe this winter your first time out on the ice depends on how you approach the lake you're fishing and how thick the ice is. I venture out on thin ice every year and have learned a few things in order to stay on the topside of the ice. These are my recommendations for someone itching to get out for some amazing early ice fishing as much as I was anxious to get out there on the ice and catch some brook trout. I had never fished this lake before and I also share how I go about picking where I will be fishing. I hope you learn a few thing, stay dry and stay safe this early ice fishing season.

Hey Doc good one ! You should consider making instructional
videos :-) . It was almost 2,weeks ago I took this pic , we were
Bird hunting and I broke thru some pond ice rather easily
earlier that day. I was checking a large reservoir for open water
And late ducks . There was some south of this location ....
I'm just not that brave !

Thanks for the video Brandon, always picking up a thing or two from you.
Unrelated but from a former video I ended up getting one of those pisci reels you had and pretty happy with it so far.

I do a bunch of instructional videos and a lot of my videos have little segments of fishing advice.  The How To videos are usually by most watched videos for sure.  I will try to do more.  But always need ideas of stuff to do them on.  If you have any let me know.

Thanks.  Yeah I actually put my Piscifun Honor spinning reel and Torrent Bait caster to the test on the river for fall salmon this month and they did really well.  Really happy with them so far.  Will take them out on the ice.  ultimate test next.

I tried out their baitcaster and for 50 bucks its pretty good too!

Catching Chum and Coho Salmon on the Vedder River in British Columbia with the Piscifun Torrent Baitcasting Reel. This is my first year really starting to get into river fishing for salmon. The prior two years I had pretty dismal success. This year things are starting to make sense and I'm catching the odd Salmon. I've been using the Piscifun Reels including the Honor Spinning reel and the Torrent Baitcaster. The Torrent is mounted on a 9 foot Diawa float rod that I have spooled with 20 pound Power Pro braided line. Today the guys fishing around me were catching salmon floating roe, but I didn't have any. So I tied on a pink Bent Rods Jig below the float and the action started quick with a nice male chum and then soon after a great wild Coho salmon.

Hi Doc:

Thanks for the river fishing video.

I was wondering how that Diawa rod you were float fishing with compares with a good walleye rod in terms of spine and tip?

Would you use that setup for steelhead?

Was there a reason for using a little lighter setup for your bobber-jig combination?

Thanks again.

Cheers ;)

Sorry this is not a light set up.  I was wrong I just looked at the rod.  Thanks I went and actually looked at the rod.  I've updated the comment below the video on youtube too, thanks.  The reel I originally had on it was a Diawa.  I guess the rod isn't a diawa. Sorry I'm mistaken.

The Rod actually says Angler SS salmon/steelhead  ASS6105MHC 10'6"  10-20 pound.

This rod has a ton of back bone and I feel I could haul anything in with this.  I think it would be way far overkill for the pike and walleye we catch most of the time.  Its like fishing with a 2x4.

For my jig fishing rod and spoon rod I just use the Ugly Stik Elite spinning 7'0" Medium  (6-15lb).  This rod I would feel more suitable for walleye and pike... a little under powered for the bigger salmon.  I hooked a big chum on it and it was a battle... I'll post the video when I get it made.
