Trying Something New.
« on: November 18, 2017, 06:52:30 PM »
So been tossing a few ideas around my head and different styles to try for a while now. Been using spin cast reels for quit a few years and I like them they work fine but my issue is I built a box for my quad a couple years back (I posted pics) the compartment I built to hold the reels and rods is low profile and in order to get the reels in I have to fold over the handles kind of a pain. Thought about Bait Cast reels but everything up here is pretty pricey. Then been looking at some of the low pro ice reels they make these days they look alright. Then today was at a local sporting good stores and I saw these low end fly reels. I thought what the heck I'll give them a try. Very affordable of they don't work and very nice reel for the price. Filled them with approx 50' Dacron backing I had at home and about 50' mono. I think they will work quite fine, heck of a noisy clicker on them so will be able to hear when a fish spools line, be kind of like a mini mooching reel, which I love fishing salmon with. Most of my fishing is for walleye or pike so I think they will work great.

Neat idea Walleyes, interested to see how they work out.  I know exactly what you mean about fitting a bunch of spinning rods together at the end of the day.  Have to do the same thing with the handles to get everything to fit in my rod bags.
Should be a way to turn the clicker off if you get tired of it.  Little switch on the housing or sometimes gotta pop the spool off and flip the tooth over.

I'm looking forward to fighting a nice Pike on em. Like I said it will be like a mooching reel which I love fighting fish on.

I also don't think they will be as bad for coiling the line all up like the small spools on the small spin casts we will see.

Interesting idea Walleyes.

I wonder if the reels will be able to handle the force applied to their body by using just mono and Dacron.

This is going to be a pretty interesting experiment. :)
