Ucluelet Salmon Fishing
« on: April 17, 2017, 06:52:31 PM »
Found an unposted Edited Video from a great day out on the Banks at Ucluelet off the West Coast of Van Island.  So thought I'd upload it now since I'm still in the midst of editing ice fishing videos when I think people have long stopped thinking about ice fishing.

I know that summer is coming and guys have been thinking of where to go on the coast this summer. I found an edited un-posted video today from an amazing day out at Ucluelet Last August. I uploaded to youtube and posted the link above. This is out on the Banks about 4 to 6 miles off shore. Ucluelet is a beautiful town with some excellent restaurants and some great fishing right near the dock. Protected waters and banks fishing for salmon and halibut just offshore. The rockfish and lingcod fishing can be really good as well close to shore.

We are headed to Sooke again this year, as much as I love the west side and Ukee the wife doesn't much care for it there. As well the son and daughter inlaw and grandkids are coming so there is a lot more to see and do on this side. I generally have pretty decent luck around Sooke, been on those waters going on 12 years now so I know them well.

We are booked in from Aug 10 - 18 I believe, catch the big floods.

Ukee is a cool little town, although I've never been to Sooke so I can't compare.  I love the ocean all around the island but especially have enjoyed Port hardy and Ukee.

So I like to fish the Half moon weeks with the smaller tides, easier fishing especially for Bottom Fish.  Do you find you have better luck during the big flood tides?  I guess lots of new fish move in with big floods but sure isn't fun trolling when the tide is really swinging.  I like the small tides.

Fishing Sooke is a little different than fishing the outside as the fish, the Chinook in particular come through in waves and not big waves like the outside, the are smaller schools of fish. The big flood tides wash in the bait, the fish follow the bait. If a guy lived there one would be able to get in the schools as they come in in between the big floods but as I don't I use every bit of advantage as I can. As you can attest to it's not a cheap trip out there one has to make it count as much as possible. An big tides wowzers if you've never been to Sooke then yah you've never seen tides, they can rip along only place I've seen with heavier tides is Campbell River through the straights there it can be crazy. You can't fish cur plug in Sooke as the tides are too strong they will just tear the herring to bits. But it's no biggy it's just part of the game.

Yeah I've fished in Campbell River and tides can be clipping along there... cannon balls straight out and boat not moving anywhere, haha.
I see what you mean, that's why its nice to fish the outside.  If slow along shore can hit the banks and there are always fish out there willing to bite the spoons!  Can't wait to get out there!
