Well, I get to cross another one off the list!
« on: July 03, 2011, 04:37:09 PM »

Got out to Cold Lake with a couple buddies to try for lakers for the first time ever.  We definitely have some learning to do, but we did manage a couple, and man were they a blast!  I can't believe the power these guys have!

Going up again in 2 weeks for the weekend, so hopefully we'll be able to make the trip a little more productive.  Big thanks to Josh for his advice...I'll be talking to you again soon!  8)
Just puttin' it out there...

Congrats Jay!  Nice laker for your first one, and good eating that size too.  Anything much bigger isn't great table fare.  When I saw the title of the thread, I was thinking I was going to see you with a pic of a quillback sucker.  I caught one that was over 7 and a half pounds years ago, and it would be the current IGFA world record if I had only known back then what to properly do with it.  The spot is now gone, with no current rushing in there like it used to those fish moved out.  :(

Thanks!  And thanks for the tip on the eating size as well...that's something I definitely didn't know.  Any advice on how to prepare such a beast for the table?  I've heard about stuffing lakers and doing it on the BBQ but honestly the wife doesn't eat a lot of fish and we'd never make it through a fish that size in one meal so I just filleted it - rather poorly I might add!  It's not terribly often that I keep fish, so I don't have a lot of practice cleaning them, but I am improving!  I didn't really waste any meat...I just sorta mangled it!

Anyway, moving right along, you just had to mention the quillback, didn't you!  That's one that's been starting to make me crazy on the river.  I've managed to hook into at least a few sturgeon over the past year and a bit, as well as damned near everything else that swims in that river (as well as some stuff that doesn't swim  :o) but I have yet to catch a quillback.  I do have a few pics of a quillback that I saw another guy catch down at the river this spring...I want to say it was in the 7lb neighborhood but I honestly don't remember anymore.
Just puttin' it out there...

Nice little football ..er Laker Geezle.  I like to stuff my trout with onions and spices. I also am not all that great at filleting so i cut all the fins out and cut down the backbone on either side a little ways down so when it comes out of the barbeque or oven it pulls away from all the bones so easily leaving the most meat intact in two separate sides.

Have fun on your next trip..

Uhhh...I'm not even 100% sure on that one anymore.

We were supposed to get up there again this weekend but stuff came up and we had to abort the trip.  Hope to at least get a day trip or two up there yet this season though.

Well we had a shot injector on the boat motor so we were pretty limited in where we could go and what we could do.  I got mine on the ol' white tube jig, and thorne's was caught on a Bionic Bucktail...so I guess you could say those ones worked.

Our trip for this weekend had to be aborted due to unforseen circumstances but we're hoping to go back in 2 weeks I believe.  I've got some more stuff to try, and I'm sure I'll acquire more before the trip now that I've got more time!!

Just puttin' it out there...

That's a nice slab of a Lake Trout you got there. Congrats.

When I caught them back in Ontario,I found that cooking them with a simple method was best. I just cut the head off,gut them and cut out the fins and remove the tail. I would then cover the cavity surface with salt, pepper, fresh dill and mayonnaise and then throw in some onion and lemon chunks and a few pats of butter. I would then wrap it up tight in tinfoil and put on the grill or in the oven. This is the way I liked to cook lake trout and I only kept fish over the 5lb mark. The biggest I cooked was about 10lbs.(Which was the biggest laker I ever caught!)
Pain is just weakness leaving the body.

I intend to live forever;so far,so good.
