What is your favorite Alberta Lake?
« on: May 10, 2019, 09:46:25 PM »
lol.. Yeah I know it's a tough call. ;D

It doesn't have to be the lake where you caught the biggest or caught the most but one that tugs at your heart strings and one that makes you feel at home.

Lots of good lakes out there but for me I'd have to say that I feel at home at Fickle lake.

Sometimes the fishing is good and sometimes the fishing is not so good but I loved this lake since 1980.  ;)

I'll be camping there this year and hopefully I'll hear the wolves howl again. ;)

Crank up the volume.

Two favorites Pigeon lake and Moose lake. Both have lots of structure from one end of the lake to the other with Moose probably being the best in that regard.  Two of my sons and I all got our PB in Alberta out of Pigeon back in the hayday about 15 years ago. We caught many nice walleye out of Pigeon but this was my best at just under 11 lbs. IMO Pigeon was bordering on a world class fishery back in those days and it was only about an hour from our house to the launch, so many great memories from back then.

I had a spot on Elinor Lake for 10 years before they turned it into a trailer park. Lots of good fishing and recreation time. I knew every hot spot on that little lake. At the time there was only about 30 seasonal lots and it wasn’t the mad house it is now. I was out that way last year and sad to see what has become of it.

This is a tough one for me, so many lakes I enjoy. For many years it would have been Beaver Lake just outside LLB, man we fished that lake every inch of it. Was a great walleye lake still is. It’s anotehr one of our collapsed walleye lakes that the walleye are eating themselves out of house and home. Oh well the natives are enjoying the netting out of it. Now it’s Cold Lake, deep clear lake with a large variety of fish, I enjoy it.

Oh ya, way too tough.  Too many.
I will throw few back country lakes out there that I love to be on.
Magician Lake, Sapphire Lake, and Sundance Lake.
Beautiful lakes with awesome fishing and not a soul in sight, because I hate people.  ;)
Little Steepbank is nice too.  See Pic.

And who said lakes are about fishing..... :)
One lake I love to be near in early October calling moose is Archie Lake.
There are a ridiculous number of moose around there.  Get in there and you will have your pick of the many bulls you will call in.
It is so good that the Royals named their new baby after it..... ;)

Fickle Lake. Been going there since I was in diapers. 51 now. I fished it as a catch and keep, heard elk bugle in the hills, seen the walleye collapse and its successful stocking. Seen some 30 lb pike come in back when i was a youngster, couple big whites but never caught a perch(but have not tried for them). Still camp there every year. Know the hot spots, can have a 100 catch day between 2 guys and not get a bite the next day. Perfect name for this lake lol.

Yes.

Back in the 80s there used to be a 4x4 trail that took you right down to the lake on the west side. Hauled a 12 footer in there once and caught dozens and dozens of small pike but nothing big. Other times we hiked in past the hoodoos and fished from shore. It's a nice lake but my hiking days are over. lol :D

Sonny,  that is the trail we used too.  Steep!  Did get a Jeep Cherokee right to the bottom once though.
We had an old boat stashed in the bush a couple hundred yards to the right of where that trail came down.  It eventually rotted out and got waterlogged though.
We knew the old trapper Gord (RIP) quite well and stayed at his place lots. He was just north of the Emerson Creek road on the Lynx Creek road back in the bush about 2 miles to the northeast at the base of that big hill.
That old place is still there but his original cabin is burnt down now, but the old white grainery cabin is still there.  Was in there a year ago, it is grown in now and you have to now where it is to find it.  I have a cool pic of his actual original log cabin on my work PC.  Will find it.
We would go south on the old Imperial lumber road a few miles and then cut off to the left (east) on that Sundance Lake trail.  Things have sure changed around there now.  I used to know it like the back of my hand, but now I can get lost easy in there.
Used to do a a February weekend camp out many years in a row in the late eighties.  Down past the narrows was a hot spot but you had to watch for open water.
There are some big pike in there.  I personally caught several in the 15 pound range, one on a fly rod.  That was interesting.
There are 2 separate varieties of pike in there, the green grass pike and the pinker fleshed ones which were much bigger.  Maybe it was just different diet but they sure looked different.

Yes.

As a 12 ish yr old, dad and uncles would park somewhere on a cutline near the lake and we would hunt around it. I remember a high ground walking trail dad always would end up on looking down on the lakes. You guys must have read my mind, it is why I asked as we also would go down that cut line off an old windy road with the hunting jeep in winter and park atop that steep drop, walk down and ice fish. I recall dad always saying there were lots of sleds at the bottom due to springs. Not sure if it is true but I did step on a soft spot and drop a leg up to my butt beside shore.

I remember 2 feet out from shore the auger hit dirt, 4 ft and you were in good water already. Before I learnt what a big pike feels like when your hand lining, I had something heavy grab my jig and pull hard once and break off. The dads didn't believe me I had a big one on. Years later I got to know what that feeling was and am sure I had a decent sized pike on.

Dad always said one lake was pike, one had trout. I have tried twice to go back in the summer years ago, used the argo and 12 ft tinner in the trailer that hauls the argo but never found that trail to the lake. Got to seeing the lake but we were no where near any place to launch. Got the trailer stuck in some good crap trying to find that lake again lol.

It is a lake I have wanted to re find for 30 yrs and actually fish it again. Good memories thinking about this lake have flooded back in the last couple days. Great thread.

Another lake that I have many fond memories of is Lake Iosegun  up by Fox Creek.

Back in the day we didn't have a camper so we just tented it and slept in sleeping bags. Camping was free back then and so was the firewood, you just won't see that anymore but the odd lake still supplies firewood.
We had a little 12 footer with an old 4.5hp Mercury outboard. It would take us about 45 minutes to get to our favourite fishing spot at the far side of the lake. You could however catch fish just about anywhere on the lake tho. Also the limit back then was 5 per day with no size limit.
A couple of things to watch for here is one... Deadheads, they are mostly on the right hand side of the lake when you are heading out past the second point but you could find some anywhere. They can be easily seen when the water is calm but not so if there is a chop on the water.
The second thing to watch for is the wind. If a strong north wind blows up the lake gets really rough really fast. This is bad news if you are out in a little tinner.
This lake used to be crazy busy on weekends but now with the no keep limits except for tags this lake is pretty quiet now.
Most walleye were in the 18-20 inch range but catching a 100 fish a day was not hard to do. Our biggest pike here was about 12lbs.Some nice humpback perch here too if you can find them.

Yes sir we had many fun filled camping trips here. :)

Spence lake when I was a kid was a special place. Before the days of quads and trikes. We used to boat across Tiuchwood and walk over to Spence. Just stand on the shore and cast bare jigs and limit out on nice walleye in a couple hours. There were a few boats stashed in there if you wanted to row as well which we did often. It was hard on hooks with all the dead fall in the lake but man the walleye was unreal. The Bro in law had float planes in those days and every once and a while when some of his relatives would come up from the states he would fly my dad and I in there and we would get in a couple boats and fish. I’ll never see those days again not in this province.

Heart Lake was another walleye lake we fished just about every Saturday through the summer. We lived at the saw mill at imperial mills and would go in to the lake often. In those days it wasn’t like it is now there was not such a separation between the natives and the whites, everybody got along a lot better. You could take your vehicle in there and leave it and not worry about it. But eventually the natives killed the walleye out of it by setting nets on Francis Creek every spring, they would load the walleye up in the boxes of trucks and haul them out and sell them on the black market. With in a few years of that it was wiped out, killed all the spawners. I would love to try it again but they’ve pretty much shut the lake off to outsiders now, if you did get in I’m sure your truck would be burned by the time you were done, it’s bad in there. There is access in the back of the lake if you know the trail,, we may try it some day.

To be specific the Heart Lake band should have never been granted treaty status as the original group that lived on the lake was started by a chipwian women and a Scottish man, they are Metis not status Indians. In fact they didn’t get their status until the early to mid ‘70’s. Another very corrupt band. The current chief I went to school with is the son of the first chief of the band who was a very close friend of my fathers for many years until his true colours appeared later in life. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. The Monias family has ran that reserve since its inception. Yes they have done some good but also take a lot from the band. The current chief spends a good deal of his time on his 1200 + acre ranch down in Colarado. All bought and paid for by under handed deals with oil companies and band funds.

Heart lake I don’t believe is listed as collapsed as it doesn’t matter what it’s status is no one in their right mind would go in there and fish anyways so it’s a mute issue. As far as eggs of the females this could be but it’s news to me they went in there and got eggs, eggs from what they all but wiped the walleye out of that lake with their nets.

Getting back to Sundance Lake for a second.
There is a little lake just a mile to the south of of the main Sundance Lake.  It is not in the canyon, south of the narrows.
It apparently has some very nice Brookies in it.  Some friends of mine did very well there.
I must try that out this summer sometime.
Google maps show access within a couple kms of it.  Walk or quad from there.

I was the one who counted the eggs out of the huge females in eighties, when the lake was collapsing.

Man that's a tough one, but if guess if I could only fish one Alberta lake for the rest of my life it would be Cold for sure.  A little bit of everything and trophy class potential of every species that swims in it.  Add to that it's big enough that there is always new places to discover and old places to re visit.

Did you ever fish Emerson lakes to the west of Sundance?

I hunted in that area and even shot my first elk just across the road aways from Emerson.

But for some strange reason I never fished there.
