200 yard bush gun... what would you buy???
« on: June 26, 2011, 07:56:58 PM »
hey guys... was doing some financial planning the other day and found out that i am in the market for a good bush gun... i want something short preferably a lever action but it doesnt have to be... i do most of my hunting in pretty tight quarters and im just wondering what all yall would recommend ? im thinking of the larger calibers and already own a .30-30 and its just not enough... any input would be highly considered

I have a Marlin 1895 in 45/70 that I would recommend for such a game. I have a scope on mine but depending on what you're doing and the conditions you're most likely to encounter that might not be necessary. Out to 200 shouldn't be an issue.

I know of a gun shop that has a  Ruger 77 Laminante compact in 358 Win on it's shelf right now.

16.5" bbl, and great out to 250yds.

My personal bush gun favorites are these two:

Ruger #1RSI in 7x57

Pre 81 Browning BLR in 358Win.

45-70 will the job but for a little better distance then I would go for a 444 marlin.  It would be great up to 200 yards.

OK I think Dick might have the winner with that Browning.

I'm pretty partial to my blr in 450 marlin.  My wife shoots a model 94 in 375win. which is, I believe, an underrated calibre as well.
A 358 win. always interested me, but I've just never come across the "right" one in a blr at the right price.

Something to consider, if you reload;  I've found the straightwall 450 cases last pretty much forever, I kid you not.  I've heard the same of the 45/70 cases but can only attest to stopping counting at 20 reloads on the 450 brass, and that was quite awhile ago.

To me a bush gun is a lot less than 200 yards.  If I am going in the bush I will take my model 94 30-30 with 170 grain soft points and if I am sticking to cutlines and cut blocks I carry my Win .270

By far most of my shots are at under 100 yards anyways.

If I was buying a new bush gun it would probably be a 45-70 as well.
I think I see a rip in the social fabric, Brother can you spare some ammo?

yeah i actually bought a .444 on contractor night at cabelas on the 3rd, a day b4 grand opening... got a smokin deal on it... i took it out last weekend and sighted it in and man am i impressed with it...  i thought the recoil was going to be much higher but my 7mm kicks harder... also at 200 yards after all was said and done i put 10 shots out of 15 into the yellow on an archery target... the rest werent far off and i think its because my barrel was a little warm...good enough for this guy

also got a 12 gauge remi wingmaster and a .410 dirt cheap out of the gun library at cabelas... i paid $55 for the .410 wich is also an older remington

Mine is a Marlin GG in 45/70. Been working on a load with Lyman cast 405gr RNFP cast with wheel weights. 35gr IMR 4895. Looks promising. Shot this free standing at 50 yds. didn't get it on at a 100 as weather soured on me. The top center shot and the two far right shots were the first 3 fired after walking 300 yards and shooting without resting, the other 6 shots were after a 5 minute rest.

I have a Savage 99 in .300 savage and another in .308.  They are pretty decent "bush guns"
I also have a Win. M100 in ,284 and another in .308.  They will do.
And a Rem. 7600 pump in .35 whelen.  Works.

Dick's Browning would be a good one.

A 308 Winchester will never let a guy down.
