When does a rifle turn into a carbine? (barrel length)

I could probably google this but I'm on nightshift and I need sleep....and a carbine. ;)

A carbine is basically a short rifle. The exact parameters that make a gun a carbine can be rather subjective, but for the most part it just means a short, handy rifle.

 Rest assured that while all carbines are rifles, not all rifles are carbines.
