Ammo is expensive but WTF?
« on: January 29, 2014, 09:54:20 PM »
No 6.5 x 55 to be found in Hinton...none. :(

Stopped in Edson to check out Ron's Outdoors...

$37.99 for a box of Winchester 140 grain soft point..

$47.99 for a box of Remington core locks 140 grain..

WTF...You have got to be shitting me...$47.99 a box??

Same ammo at BassPro is $33.99...$15 cheaper..

But it gets better...A big shout out to CheapShots in Atabasca who has PPU 6.5 x 55 ammo for $26...woohoo.. ;D

Yes reloading 1. you can make some very fast and accurate loads (they don't have to be fast to be accurate) and specialized ammo.

2. you can cut the cost considerably.

6.5 X 55 has seen a gain in popularity, it seems to me, as a hunting round and some of the factory stuff is marketed for hunters.  Some may be loaded a bit hotter that it once was for the modern rifles now chambered in 6.5 X 55.  I believe it says so on some boxes.  So if you are shooting it through a very old surplus rifle be careful.

I saw a magazine on the news stand in the Coop re surplus rifles. today.  Should have made a note of the name of it for you Sonny.

Another vote for reloading if you don't already.

In the case of your 6.5 swiss:
Primer:  3.5-4.5 cents depending on brand
Powder:  Around 40gr (36.00 divided by 7000gr/lb = .005 x 40 = .20/round ( http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp )
Bullet:  Even 40/box of 100=.4 ea.  (you can buy bullets for about 60% of that)

Total:  .64 ea x 20 = 12.80/box  Using less expensive bullets could drop another 6-8 cents per bullet off the price as well, but keep in mind these are just rough figures using an average of load and price of components to give an idea of cost.

Some people don't like reloading, I enjoy it.  You can amaze yourself with the accuracy you can achieve by trying different loads;  every rifle is different.  Don't have to spend a fortune to start, either.  Lee sells an anniversary starter kit for under 150 bucks and Lee RGB(really good buy) two die sets even come with a shellholder.

I'm no expert, but have been reloading as long as I've been shooting.  If you have any questions if I don't know the answer I'm sure someone else on here will.  All that being said, some simply don't enjoy reloading, so it's not for everyone.  It's really almost another hobby unto itself, but it beats watching reruns on cold winter evenings.

Found some cheap soft points for the Mosin .Home hardware had six boxes of this stuff for only $12.50 per box so I took them all.

I don't know how good this ammo is but it should knock a deer down. :)
