Lapping scope rings
« on: February 28, 2017, 12:49:01 PM »
I have been installing scopes on my own guns for years and have never lapped the rings. I was schooled back in the day by my Dad on how to install scopes and it's something we just didn't do. But I was doing a bit of reading on the subject, and wonder if most of you guys lap when you install your scopes. Don't know maybe I have been doing it wrong all these years. Never had a bunch of problems sighting in or damage to the scope that I can remember.

I never did either but started a couple guns back. I have never been a paper shooter so pinpoint accuracy was never something I strived for. I've always considered myself a hunter not a shooter but I guess the last few years I've fallen for some of today's hypes. I went out and bought a Wheeler lapping kit. Watched the video supplied with the kit and have done two of my rifles and a few for my boys. There's really not a lot to it, it's pretty straight forward. Has it helped I have no idea like I said I'm not a sharp shooter, but I guess I can say it's done and I sound cool around the camp fire with my 300 WSM with a lapped scope. That's  about all it means to me lol.

Did you find the rings out of alignment much? they say if your using a 1 piece base you should lapp, as the "alignment" can play havoc with the sight in of the scope.  But like you I'm a hunter not a sharp shooter, I seen the wheeler kit at Cabel's I think it was $179.00. I was close to buying it, then kind of snapped out of it and and told myself I have done without it for years with no problem.  I want to sound cool around camp to,  8) but I think it will take more then 179.00 bucks.

I haven't bought into it and I have bought most everything lol.

Don't see the need with pic rails and good mounts.

Picked up a Sinclair scope alignment tool and some shims that seams to handle most issues with two peace bases.

Witnesses marks are a good thing to watch for movment.

My rings definitely showed signs of not being aligned. It took a fare amount of lapping to get them evened out. Mine were actually the worst couple of the boys weren't all that bad. But like I said did it help, not that it is apparent to me. But in the end it's another excuse to play with guns and get the smell of gun oil in the air so, in that case it's worth it.
