PAL Renewal - Long Wait
« on: March 26, 2013, 08:44:16 AM »
If you are renewing your PAL, be prepared to wait in excess of 3 months.  My PAL was expiring on my birthday at the end of January.  I sent in the renewal at the end of December and still haven't received it back yet.  I checked it online and they received it a few days after I sent it.  I called the 1-800 number in early February and they said there are no problems and it is in the process.  I called again yesterday and they said it is done being processed and is in the print queue and will be out sometime in the next 3 weeks.  This is a standard renewal with no changes or issues.

The RCMP are even slower than the old Federal firearms registry people.  Over 3 months for a stinken renewal, come on people!  >:(  I stopped by the RCMP gun registry booth at the sportsman show and the officers there were completely full of bs.  They didn't even know the law.  They claimed (when asked specifically) that all guns must be stored with trigger locks even in a locked gun safe.....wrong.   When asked about long renewal times for PALs, they said no way it should take that long and something must be changed in the renewal application.....wrong again!  They are just that sloooow.

Not impressed by these guys at all.  Good thing I don't need to purchase ammo or new guns during this renewal time.
I think I see a rip in the social fabric, Brother can you spare some ammo?

That is a little excessive.  Mine is up this year in November so you are saying I should start now.  Nice.

They didn't even know the law.

Don't count too much on the RCMP for advice on the gun laws, most don't know much about it, always look into it yourself.

I wonder how soon before it expires you're allowed to being to re-apply?

I remember after taking the courses for both restricted (and Non), I went to a detachment to drop it off and the officer at the counter said she didn't know what a PAL was?! Is that even possible. Once it explained firearms license she said its federal and didn't have even a number or address for me to send it to. So went back to AHEIA for it.

You'd hope there was more common knowledge on gun laws and that the process would be a little more user friendly. Back then I just didn't know any better, and really, seems individuals have to "arm" themselves with more info than the cops or you'll be left high and dry if u have questions.

Better to apply to re-cert early than later I guess. Happy birthday huh!? Not.

I was going to post a pdf link to that tan colored rcmp brochure, you know the one, most sporting goods have them on the counter, showing requirements to transport, store, etc;  and state that I ALWAYS have one in the vehicle, just in case I run into some 4' tall not shaving yet, "keener" fresh out of toronto......

However, this is what I found on the rcmp site in it's place:  http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/fs-fd/PDF/storage-entreposage.pdf  Note the subtle differences from the old one.  As huntress stated, make sure YOU KNOW the law.

The only thing I don't like about our dodge truck is there's nowhere to mount a window rack.   ;)

All that being said, I'm sending off my pal renewal tomorrow, will send it expedited so I know when it arrives, wonder how long it'll take?  Maybe we should start a pool?

Mine expires in August, Sent it last week.  They have not charged my cc yet so unsure if they receive it. ( knowing the government that would be the first thing they would do). Anyways I hope to get it before August.

Does having a restricted licsence as well just non restricted, play a factor in how long it takes?

Cheers

I would say yes, it does. As they will then make sure you've been in good standing with your gun club for at least a year and do a more thorough check before they renew the restricted.

Hey BruceW, I say let's have a pool lol! And if u have that link to the pdf that would be great as I don't think I've seen this brochure and I'd sure like one!

Just received my new card in the mail yesterday.  Almost exactly 3 months.  Send in the renewal as soon as you get your expiry letter and renewal application.

Got my renewal just in time.  Harper decided that the free renewals for non-restricted PALS will now cost $60.00.  I get to keep my 60 bucks for another 5 years.  They expect to rake in $18 mil a year.
And Harper brags about no new taxes.....oh ya this isn't exactly a tax.... ::)

Harper, get the fock out of our wallets!  >:(  Money is just like crack for politicians.

$60/5 years = $15 per year...I can live with that since Harper got rid of the LGR...*we need a thumbs up smile*

Sonny, but why do we pay taxes if they charge us for every little thing they do.  60 bucks won't kill me, it is just the principle of it.
Don't forget the GST on that too.

So many new fees on crap these days that our taxes used to cover.

I won't forget the Dreaded GST but Harper did lower it from 7% to 5%,also thay waived the fee for gun registry did they not?

Lest just hope the Lieberal don't get back in cause then we will all pay higher taxes..

I would rather have all those lieberals pay through their taxes to have me checked out so I don't pose any threat to them with my wicked ol' guns, instead of me picking up that tab.  It is them who so desperately want that peace of mind.  We are all in this together.  I suppose they would say that the 60 bucks doesn't even begin to pay the PAL checkout administration though.
